Karyn Robichaud""Cool Cat Teacher" Vickie Davis made a comment that stuck with me, back in the
Edublogger "unconference" before NECC this past summer--"We need to start
referring to "professional networking" and "student networking" instead of
"social networking," because the terminology is already overburdened with
negative connotations. I don't know though, maybe we need to continue to
legitimize the "social" and hope the world catches up." -

Srt thakStudents have faster thumbs-- they use SMS as a social network, but most adults I know without Blackberries find that too tedious, although more are using mobile Twitter.

Students don't think of it any differently than using a cell phone; just a part of how they communicate
-
As I see it, the students use social networking for social reasons while the educators use social networking for networking reasons. I think it boils down to the fact that we (educators) remember how difficult it was to share information in the 'olden days' and so we grab onto the SN tools with open arms... pupils/students don't know any other way of working so the tools are not – of themselves – particularly special and so they are merely a means to communicate...
-
- I think students do find it difficult to use these tools for more formal purposes. A helped a teacher set up a wiki for his classroom, showed the students how to use it, etc. A few days later, he asked the students how they were doing, and they said ok. It's just slow by email (!!!!!!) When he asked, "Why don't you use the wiki," they had one of those "duh!" moments.

Tonight my teenaged son had to solve simultaneous equations using a method called visualisation with which I was unfamiliar. Without skipping a beat, he IMed a friend who explained, complete with graphs (charts) handdrawn with the mouse. The two of them collaborated via this method, interspersing the requisite personal observations about girlfriends, etc. Seamless
