In 2006 I was worried that we were preparing students for our past, not their future. In 2016, I still am.

What kind of research did we do to determine that 120 minutes was the appropriate and most effective amount of homework each night

Was there a correlation between the amount of homework that high school students reported doing and their scores on standardized math and science tests?

The research provides little or no support for number one. What little support it does give could be accomplished by giving them time in class to practic

I have yet to see any research that shows that assigning homework teaches responsibility

What kind of research did we do to determine that 120 minutes was the appropriate and most effective amount of homework each night?
-
So if we just made up this number, how is that "data-driven"? Perhaps we need to sit down and rethink this and decide if that's truly the best number.
-
if we did that, then we'd probably also want to look at the research on the effectiveness of homework in general
-
research shows no support for homework at all at the elementary level
-
at the high school level there is only a weak correlation between homework and increased test scores
-
There was no relationship whatsoever between time spent on homework and course grade, and “no substantive difference in grades between students who complete homework and those who do not.”
-
even most of what I've read in support of homework tends to show it having a relatively small effect on student "achievement"
-
So why do we assign homework?
-
- Students need the practice.
- I can't cover the curriculum unless I give homework.
- It teaches responsibility
-
The research provides little or no support for number one.
-
Instead of assigning homework (and assigning students a "second shift") in order to cover the curriculum, we should change the curriculum.
-
I would suggest that giving them meaningful and important things to do might teach them responsibility better than assigning homework of dubious value.
-
any homework we assign should be justified.

Randon RugglesAn awesome educational technology blog from a mentor and the creator of the Shift Happens original video - Karl Fisch. Karl does a wonderful job demonstrating what it looks like to be a someone that truly promotes activities at his school in addition to how blogging for a school should appear. He has lots of ideas in his posts and/or the posts of others that can easily be integrated within your own setting.

I think it's important to note that she doesn't say you won't fail at some things, in fact she acknowledges that failure is a huge part of any ultimate success. She argues that it's not failure that's the problem, but our fear of failure that prevents us from attempting "great things."

The 21st century world is media saturated, technologically dependent, and globally connected. We live in a multimedia age where the majority of information people receive comes less often from print sources and more typically from highly constructed visual images, complex sound arrangements, and multiple media formats. The multimedia age requires new skills for accessing, analyzing, evaluating, creating, and distributing messages within a digital, global, and democratic society. The acquisition and application of critical analysis and media production skills are part of what constitutes media literacy. The Internet and the everyday use of social networking technologies, together with the expansive growth of corporate entertainment media and the integration of popular culture, also require us as social studies educators to link participatory media literacy with civic education. Among a larger than usual proportion of the teachers in the room there seemed to run a general level of distrust of our students. That we needed to control them, and filter the world for them, and make decisions for them. Now, I'm the first one to acknowledge that this is not a black-and-white issue, that as the adults we do sometimes have to make decisions that we feel are in the best interests of our students and that, occasionally, that may mean filtering or blocking - basically censoring - what they are exposed to
-
I wonder about the students in that teacher's class who can't be trusted with the newspaper, and how exactly when they turn 18 they suddenly will be able to handle it? I wonder about the students in that teacher's class who walk out into an unfiltered world when they leave the school building and are not having any guidance from the educators in their lives how best to deal with it? I
