Chat happens in real-time which can make discovery and new understanding a very exciting, shared experience. As well as generating lots of online and offline discussion, chat can: -
Planning a chat
Choosing a topicSpend time co-ordinating the chat with the teacher in your partner school. Agree a topic you're going to chat about and set aside time to let your students research and prepare some ideas and discussion topics.TimeYou'll need to coordinate chat times carefully. The world clock website is a good resource to help with this. Also set a time limit for the chat.Classroom layoutThink about the number of PCs and the number of students. Is it possible to have each student by themselves at a PC or would you prefer to have groups of two or three working together at a PC? Could you display the chat on a whiteboard so the whole class can follow the discussion?Chat leaderIdentify who will lead the chat. This could be a moderator or teacher who can guide the discussion similar to the way a teacher would lead in the classroom.MonitoringIt is not necessary to run risks if you want to chat in real time with your partner school. You simply need to ensure that when you create a private chatroom it is used only in classroom time under your supervision. If you can't monitor everyone, limit the number of accounts that have access to the chat and group the students together. When the chat is finished copy the content and then delete the chatroom.Stay SMARTAlthough your chat will take place in a private, protected environment, you could raise your students' awareness about online safety issues, such as not giving out personal info and the importance of following SMART rules by working through this lesson plan prior to the chat.
