Liz Ixer@LizIxer jumping in out of turn, but have a look at http://t.co/gah391U0A3 . I joined at home and am thus far impressed with the filtering.

Ashley EvansHere is the link to the available "Family Safety" plans that OpenDNS has. I would suggest starting with the free plan and then evaluating the paid plans based on the additional features to see if you would like to have the additional functionality or not.
OpenDNS works by setting up custom DNS servers on your home router so that every new device connected to your home network will be handed these custom DNS servers (Wikipedia article on just what DNS is). When one of these devices then tries to go to a URL, the OpenDNS servers are queried. To find a website, DNS matches the URL (like www.google.com) to the ip address of the server (ex, you can reach google.com at 74.125.228.97 among other ip addresses). So when a URL is queried to OpenDNS, it opens up new functionality to you - you can tell OpenDNS to block a specific URL from being displayed (it gives the user a block page instead) or you can block specific categories of URLs - like pornography, or pages that host malware or viruses).
So, to sign up for the OpenDNS free version, go here. After you sign up, you'll need to log in to your home router to configure the DNS settings. This is a specific process to your router, but you can look on the OpenDNS Forums under the category "Router Instructions" for others in the community who have made a tutorial for your specific router (if they don't have instructions for your exact model, try just the manufacturer [ex Linksys] as many of the same routers from the same manufacturer use the same interface).
Also, you will need to install the OpenDNS ip updater so that OpenDNS can link your home's ip address to your OpenDNS account (your home ip address changes only about once a week - you don't need to be constantly running your computer in order for this to work).
After it is set up, every computer on your network will query OpenDNS for resolving URLs. This means that you don't need any software installed on the computer to filter it. Also, devices that you can't install filtering software on (read that as iphones, ipods, ipads, or other phones or tablets) can still be filtered! If your child's friends come over with their own device, they will also be filtered! No setup or configuration required beyond what you've already done!
Occasionally you might want to log in to OpenDNS Free. In your account, you can see reports of what web traffic has been coming from your home as well as information on what has been blocked. In this control panel, you can add URLs that you would like to block (or allow) that may not have been categorized yet or been categorized imporperly.
See the OpenDNS Forums for more information or to answer any questions you may have. -

Nobu TarouThis is a DNS. By using this, I can block unsafe domains. After I get an account, I can block domains by categories. But OpenDNS doesn't have a category for ads. My IP is floating one, but OpenDNS has a special tool for this.
