My favorite thing about Field Trip Earth is that they offer free classroom Skype sessions, where their researchers and scientists will provide a workshop for your students via Skype. The FTE staff will coordinate a time and topic with you, based on your educational objectives, and send you a presentation from which to work. Your job is to have 2 projectors and at least one computer hooked up with Skype. One projector shows the presentation materials sent by FTE, while the other shows the Skype session to the students. Mark McAllister, from the FTE offices, spent a great hour with my students talking about how scientists use technology in wildlife conservation and tracking, particularly with the Red Wolves of Eastern North Carolina. He had a well-organized, engaging presentation and students were able to ask questions

Field-report site provides online learning adventure for students
Students are learning about wildlife, biology and other subjects through first-hand accounts and field reports provided by researchers and scientists on Field Trip Earth -- a Web site created by the North Carolina Zoological Society. The Web site provides a type of virtual field trip where students read articles and look at photos and videos. One teacher in Virginia Beach, Va., says she uses the site to teach her students about endangered red wolves, and a North Carolina teacher says the site adds to lessons on natural resources.virtual_fieldtrips wildlife biology photos videos science animals resources research interactive Environment

Take your students on a world tour as they learn about Appalachian black bears, red wolves of Alligator River, the elephants of Cameroon and many more species without ever leaving the classroom. Students can read field reports and essays from wildlife experts, interview the researchers, listen to recorded phone calls, see videos shot in the field, and discuss conservation issues. Ongoing wildlife conservation projects from around the world are available from an interactive map. Clicking on a choice brings up a full report including a media gallery. There are a wealth of resources available for educators that include more than a dozen fact sheets for emerging readers on various animals such as the hippopotamus, polar bear, and African elephant; information on using the FTE server to create their own animal tracking maps online; reviews of at least twenty children’s books dealing with conservation topics including tips for how they can be used in conju nction with conservation study; an example of a map interpreting exercise; ideas for using paper-based activities alongside the Web site; plus a host of strategies (lesson plans) that have been submitted by other teachers.
