The Philippines said yesterday it had arrested a leading member of a militant Muslim group that planned to attack the Manila stock exchange and the US embassy using electronically detonated truck bombs.

An intelligence report shown to reporters said the Abu Sayyaf group sent Abdulmukim Edris to the capital to head a group that would bomb the US mission, major shopping malls and the building housing one of the country's two stock trading floors.

Edris stood with his head bowed about 10 paces behind President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as two soldiers held his arms when he was presented to the media. He was not allowed to speak.
