Government troops rescued three Malaysian hostages held by Muslim rebels on a southern Philippine island following skirmishes with their captors.
The Malaysians were freed after troops raided a mangrove area on Jolo Island and fought for over an hour with rebels.
Abu Sayyaf rebels have been holding the Malaysians since September 10 and still hold an American and a Filipino hostage.
Fighting continued after the Malaysians were rescued, but there were no reports on casualties.
On Tuesday, 19 rebels including a rebel commander surrendered to the military on Jolo, bringing to 110 the number of Abu Sayyaf guerrillas who have given up since government troops launched an operation on September 16 to free an initial 19 hostages.
