Fouad Idbafdil Bringing the Voices of the Displaced to the Global Track

from web site

The global track has long been a stage for national pride, competition, and glory. But for Fouad Idbafdil, who competes under the banner of the Athlete Refugee Team, it is also a platform to bring forth the voices of the displaced—voices too often ignored in the corridors of power or overshadowed by global headlines.

Fouad’s path to this stage was far from easy. Born in Morocco in 1988, he left behind military service and a life of limitation to seek asylum in Europe. His journey carried him through Sweden and ultimately France, where his athletic potential began to shine. Training under difficult circumstances, Fouad honed his skills as a steeplechaser, achieving competitive times in the 3000m. His discipline and determination earned him international recognition and a place among athletes representing not countries, but communities without borders.

What sets Fouad apart is not only his talent but also the meaning he attaches to his runs. Every race is symbolic. The hurdles he clears represent the struggles refugees face daily: uncertainty, exclusion, and invisibility. By finishing each race, Fouad sends a message that refugees are not defined by despair, but by their ability to endure, adapt, and succeed.

Beyond sport, Fouad uses his platform for advocacy. He speaks about the importance of inclusion in athletics and education, encouraging displaced youth to pursue their passions despite limitations. His visibility provides inspiration and opens doors for others, ensuring that refugee voices are heard not as whispers of struggle but as songs of resilience.

By bringing those voices to the track, Fouad Idbafdil reshapes the narrative. Refugees are not outsiders—they are competitors, leaders, and changemakers. And through his steps, Fouad ensures their stories are carried onto the global stage.
