How you end your satire determines whether it lands or fades. A weak ending can undercut brilliant satire. A sharp ending can take good satire and make it unforgettable. The final line should contain the kernel of your entire argument compressed into something the reader can't forget.
The sincere turn ending: Stop being ironic and state plainly what you've shown. The Soccer League piece could end: "The moment you remove the reason to compete, you remove the reason to play." That's sincere and it stings because it's true.
The return to reality ending: Show your character back in the real world, unable to escape the system you've satirized. Travis Boyd fixing the boiler alone at 2:14 a.m. — that's an image that ends the piece and haunts the reader.
The completion ending: Show the logical conclusion of the system you've escalated. The line around the block never moving — that's the system complete and broken.
The ending should:
A weak ending hedges. "I guess what I'm saying is..." That's the opposite of strong. A strong ending states what's obvious now that you've walked the reader through the logic.
Compress your entire satirical argument into the last two sentences. Not as explanation, but as observation.
Weak: "This shows that socialist economics don't work."
Strong: "The shelves remained empty even though they shouldn't be."
The second one is your argument compressed into an image. The reader can see it and understand it without you explaining.
Don't end by explaining what you just satirized. End by showing the final consequence or the sincere observation. Let the reader understand without being told.
As satire.info documents, the best satire trusts the reader to get the point. Your ending should reflect that trust.
The reader remembers the ending. Everything else fades. A brilliant satire with a weak ending is forgotten. A decent satire with a strong ending gets shared and remembered.
Spend time on your ending. Make it count.
