In reviewing Tracy Austins autobiography, he finds a way, despite his disappointment with the book, to say something about athletic greatness and mediocrity, and what truly differentiates them, remembering how as a player he would often get divided, paralyzedWallace is able not only to give us the moment but to let us see the strategic and geometric intelligence that went into setting it up, the ability Federer had (has, as of this writing) to hypnotize opponents through shot selectionEleven years after its publication, many tennis fans are pleased to still get treated to so-called Federer Moments"when the jaw drops and eyes protrude and sounds are made that bring spouses in from other rooms to see if you're OK."As a whole, I think the essay genre potentially is where DFW's writing shines the mostAt times, they serve as a platform for going on long-winded tangential ramblingssome of which are as amusing as the main text, and a few which feel rather superfluouswhereas others merely function as brief and humorous fragmentations of the text, such as when he interrupts a piece of dialogue merely to interject, "sicno kidding."[1]The last essay, which is probably my favorite, is his widely lauded piece Federer Both Flesh and NotI haven't read any sports memoirs, beyond "It's Not About the Bike", so I'll take DFW's word for itI enjoyed all the essays in this collection, but the one of Federer, the account of Michael Joyce, a lesser player who I didn't know much about, and his beef with Tracy Austin's memoirs were my favoritesAnd whats true for the reader in relation to the writer is also true for the writer in relation to the readerI loved the story about Roger FedererIt can be amazing how early in life some writers figure out what they are and start to see their lives as stories that can be controlled

The humor and powers of observation get to shine through.[1]Their blindness and dumbness, in other words, are not the price of the gift but its essence, and are even the gift itselfI stopped because I burnt myself out and lost interest in the game entirelyPretty Vacant The lack of location-specificity is an important element of Vacant Lot, which the French title Terrain Vague articulates more clearlyDuring a match, you have to learn to accept what you can and cannot control, and you must quickly adapt to all the variables and different shots that can happen in every single rally within a setFirst published in 3:AM Magazine: Thursday, May 19th, 2016

He has often been described as the best tennis writer of all time, and these essays dont disabuse that notionThe key sentences in the Federer essay, to my mind, occur in the paragraph that mentions evolutionIncluding his masterful profiles of Roger Federer, Michael Joyce, and Tracy Austin, String Theory gathers all five of Wallaces famous essays on tennis, pieces that have been hailed by sportswriters and literary critics alike as some of the greatest and most innovative magazine writing in recent memoryAt such events (into which my rural excellence was an easement), he encountered conditions less favourable to his gameflag 1 likeLike see review His quotes from the Tracy Austin memoir are perfect examples of a Tell-All memoir that says almost nothing.3To get wrapped up in this collection is to get pulled deep into the mind of Wallace and, once there, of course, his inescapable subjectThe design, the materials, it's a beautiful book ffa900202a
