The Physics of Everyday Things: The Extraordinary Science Behind an Ordinary Day James Kakalios
.more flag 1 likeLike see review Kakalios achieves more success with his elucidations of the familiar refrigerator and copier machine than he does with microelectronicsI think a better approach may have been to present some of the simpler technologies and progress through more advanced ones in a linear fashion rather than progress through a "day"My comments are an independent and honest reviewCould have used more pictures and diagrams to help clarify explanationsWhat’s the simple science behind motion sensors, touch screens, and toasters? How do we glide through tolls using an E-Z Pass, or find our way to new places using GPS? InThe Physics of Everyday Things, James Kakalios takes us on an amazing journey into the subatomic marvels that underlie so much of what we use and take for grantedQuickview Environmental Science: In Context Gr 9 Up—Approximately 250 two- to four-page entries provide historical background and information on a wide variety of topics, discussing the issues involved, and their impact; primary sources are often includedTo bring you into contact with as much as possible there are side trips to the doctor to get an xray of your sore ankle, a rush to the airport and through TSA and onto a plane, a presentation you give in another city, and a night in the hotelI recognize that knowledge has changed our lives dramatically in the last 200 years has been a collective effort of many researchers, engineers, designers, entrepreneurs, etc.My gratitude to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book .more flag Like see review Quickview Deep-Sky Companions: The Caldwell Objects The Caldwell Catalogue, compiled by the late Sir Patrick Moore (1923-2012), has delighted amateur astronomers worldwide since its publication in 1995
The author mentions "pruning" in his acknowledgements but I guess I have some doubts about cutting the information to such a minimum and allowing it to lurch from one subject to anotherI'd hoped this book might fill in the gap in my education, but, frankly, I couldn't understand much of this bookMy glasses are a technologyand assistive technology, at thatWe probably address maybe twenty or thirty big picture concepts and at least a hundred or more applicationsEven simple devices are given attention, from how your toaster heats up (and why bread browns there) to CAT Scans and MRIs, how an electric thermometer works, the double redundancy of elevators and the technology used to make sure your ears don't pop on the trips up and down, and the algorithms used by your car and unlock fob to make sure another person doesn't unlock your carThe author seems to think the only thing that counts as physics is electricityThe footnotes and asides are hilarious
Through this “narrative physics,” The Physics of Everyday Things demonstrates that—far from the abstractions conjured by terms like the Higgs Boson, black holes, and gravity waves—sophisticated science is also quite practicalPlease try againNone of that did much for me, but it didn't detract either.Outside of that frame the book consists of a number of discussions of particular technologies Most of us are clueless when it comes to the physics that makes our modern world so convenientI had a lot of difficulty staying interested and focused as I read the book, not because of the material (it is presented in an excellent manner), but because the chapter sections jumped around between technologies/devices and shared little in common with other sectionsAug 20, 2017 Deb (Readerbuzz) Nance rated it liked it Oh dearI like scienceRead full reviewOthers, such as X-rays and MRI scans, routinely save lives
The book’s organization also hurtsAnd The Physics of Everyday Things will have plenty to teach youThis increases repetition and, given the turgid nature of the explanations, makes the reader’s job more difficultMost contemporary scientists and Overall, I found the book to have an interesting premise 83fc8d264e
