Batman faces his ultimate challenge as the mysterious Red Hood takes Gotham City by firestorm. One part vigilante, one part criminal kingpin, Red Hood begins cleaning up Gotham with the efficiency of Batman, but without following the same ethical code. Killing is an option. And when the Joker falls in the balance between the two, hard truths are revealed and old wounds are reopened.
There's a mystery afoot in Gotham City, and Batman must go toe-to-toe with a mysterious vigilante, who goes by the name of Red Hood. Subsequently, old wounds reopen and old, once buried memories come into the light.
Because Americans have this bias against animation as "Kiddie entertainment", we never appreciate that a good animator can do things that a 100 million in CGI and SFX could never accomplish.
The story is lifted from the Jason Todd saga of Batman, where the second Robin is killed by the Joker, only to be resurrected as the "Red Hood" (The Joker's persona before the accident that made him the Joker). He provokes the Black Mask into releasing the JOker from Arkham for a final confrontation.
Meanwhile, Batman is racked with his own guilt over letting his sidekick get killed. He then discovers the truth, only to find himself feeling even more distress over having perhaps creating a monster as bad as the ones he has to fight.
The animation is gorgeous in this film. The voice-work is great, especially John Dimaggio as The Joker. (Few scenes, but he channels both Mark Hamill and the late Heath Ledger.) "I need some guys and a truck. Well, not these guys, because they're dead!"
I got the chance to borrow this DVD for the weekend, and I've watched it 3 times already. The animation was great. It was much like what we are used to with the always awesome DCAU "Batman", yet it was still slightly different and unique. It was more along the lines of the animated film "Batman: Gotham Knight" in terms of animation. The voice actors were all great. They delivered WAY above par in their roles. Iwas upset at first that Mr. Kevin Conroy wasn't voicing Batman/Bruce in this film, but after seeing and hearing Bruce Greenwood, I think he did great. Variety is good, and Conroy was apparently busy working on the Batman/Superman upcoming animated film. The Joker was also great. This film is not a kids film. There are some seriously disturbing images in this film, and without going into specifics I can say something about a bag of severed heads, drug dealers, dousing people in petrol and burning them alive, as well as many very intense fight scenes. There was one particular chase scene involving Batman and Nightwing chasing after The Red Hood, completely intense and really had me feeling the adrenaline. As for the story itself, I can say that not much of it came as a surprise to me being an avid Batman comic/graphic novel reader, but the writers gave us a very engaging story about a very conflicted hero. There are things taken directly from such greats as "A Death in the Family" and "The Killing Joke", and they both revolved around the mystery of the Red Hood. This film can be enjoyed by comic readers, as well as those who have not as much knowledge of Batman, because it's more about what makes Batman who he is. Yes it's a fictional tale, and not quite as "real world" as Nolans wonderful films, but there is still PLENTY of great action, suspense, and even a good bit of violence to satisfy us. I'd say the best Batman animated film since "Mask of the Phantasm".
