Loosely based on a true story, Killer Elite pits two of the worlds' most elite operatives - Danny, a ruthless killer-for-hire (Robert De Niro) - against the cunning leader of a secret society of former Special Air Service operatives('Clive Owen'). When his mentor is taken captive by a disgraced Arab sheik, a killer-for-hire is forced into action. His mlission: kill three members of Britain's elite Special Air Service responsible for the death of his sons.
This movie was far more textured and interesting than I was expecting. It's certainly not a typical action flick. Basically, it's a multi-layered film about competent, high level operatives where the line between right and wrong is extremely blurred. In fact, there really is no "good guy" or "bad guy" in the narrative. It's a story about mercenaries and ex-spooks that have engaged and are currently engaged in harsh and uncompromising actions. Life and death and regret told from the point of view of Jason Statham's character. It's an engaging and intense thrill ride that apologizes for nothing. I really liked that about this movie. There's not a lot of depth but gorgeous Yvonne Stahovski and Robert DeNiro are much needed supporting characters that define Statham's character motivation and that really is enough for this type of tale.
Is it true? Does it make a difference? I don't think so! There is much controversy as to the accuracy of the underlying story and many of the reviews seem to be more based upon accuracy opinions rather than simply viewing this movie for what it is
A really good thriller! I love thrillers. This one kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing until the very end. Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys? The quality of the production, the acting, the story are all top-notch and I believe the film just did not get the promotion it deserved.
If you like the Bourne movies or the James Bond movies this movie is a little more realistic, at least in terms of its action sequences and plot line as far as that goes in those type movies.
Just throw out any baggage you have in terms of whether it is true or not, sit back and enjoy a really good action movie that will keep you interested until the very end.
