In the future, Earth becomes inhabitable and mankind moves to Nova Prime. However, aliens try to conquer Nova Prime but are defeated by the Rangers under the command of General Cypher Raige. The aliens bring the predator Ursas to hunt down the humans attracted by their fear and Raige develops the fearless ghosting technique to defeat them. On the same day that Raige returns home, his estranged son Kitai Raige is not advanced to the Ranger position in the academy. Raige promises his wife that he will travel in his last assignment before retirement and she convinces him to bring Kitai with him. When their spacecraft is damaged by an asteroid storm, she crashes on Earth and only Raige and Kitai survive. Raige breaks both legs and Kitai needs to cross the hostile and dangerous planet to retrieve the beacon and save their lives. A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help. After Earth is visually impressive and it kept me captivated right up to the end, but there was something missing from this movie, whether I expected more from Will Smith himself, or half expected that both he and his son would be fighting their way through a hostile environment together, and not just his son by himself, I can't be certain, but this somehow lacked that extra something that would put this into a "wow" category.

Story starts roughly 1000 years into the future after planet earth has been abandoned due to some non-defined environmental catastrophe, so man took off and discovered a new world to settle on, however our new home, Nova Prime, was a disputed territory and we had to fight for our survival so we could still exist as a species.

An alien race called Skrell use a particular nasty weapon called an Ursa, which is a large predatory animal that hunts it's prey by sensing our smell of fear, so it locates it's prey by sensing chemical pheromones. In order to combat this new threat the Ranger Corps was established, however in order to fight the ursas, man had to develop a way of controlling his fear. General Cypher, played by Will Smith learns to completely suppress his fear a technique called "ghosting", and with this new found ability is able to lead humanity to victory.

Cypher's son, Kitai, played by Jaden Smith, is a ranger cadet and desperately wants to become a ranger ever since he saw his sister killed by an ursa when he was a child. He and his father share a rocky relationship as Kitai wants to impress his father in becoming a ranger like him, while Cypher is disappointed in his son's lack of focus.

The two are thrust together as Cypher plans to retire after one last mission and at his wife's request, takes Kitai along with him in order to perhaps teach him something as well as hoping to forge a better bond. Along the way the ship runs into a meteor shower and is damaged, in order to escape they create a worm hole type of effect to thrust themselves forward and to escape damage, however this does not fully work and the ship ends up off course and crash lands on earth, which is now classed as a quarantined planet and all life has evolved in order to kill humans.

The ship breaks in half on entering the atmosphere and all the crew expect Cypher and Kitai are killed. Cypher ends up with 2 broken legs and the only working emergency beacon is in the tail part of the ship. It's up to Kitai to travel the 100 kilometers alone over hostile country to retrieve it. To make matters worse, the ship was transporting a live ursa, which may or may not have survived the impact. The only way Cypher can help his son is by way of 360 degree view screens, a wrist communicator and multiple probes launched from the damaged ship. Along the way Kitai encounters a number of large and unfriendly predators such as baboons, tigers and condors, all seemingly larger and evolved. The air is no longer fully suitable for humans so Kitai needs to inhale oxygen enhancing capsules.

Eventually Kitai reaches the tail, but the beacon won't transmit due to disturbance in the ionosphere, so to overcome this he needs to reach higher ground. In doing so he finds that the ursa has survived and managed to kill several crew members by impaling them on tree branches. The scene causes Kitai to be afraid and once this happens the ursa is able to track him. The ursa follows Kitai all the way up a volcanic mountain and after several near misses and then a near fatal attack, Kitai begins to learn what his father had been telling him about learning to ghost. Kitai learns to control his fear rendering the ursa unable to track him and he can then kill the animal. The signal beacon is fired and both manage to be rescued.

Overall this is a basic father/son story. The special effects make it look like another sci-fi action flick, but the story is the same. There are unresolved issues between them all of which are overcome by the end of the film.

While After Earth was visually impressive I did expect more from it. Even if there has been a cataclysm on old Earth and it's 1000 years into the future, I don't see animals evolving that rapidly into what they were in the movie. Earths atmosphere can apparently no longer provide enough oxygen to cater for human lungs, despite the whole planet seemingly being covered in one huge forest and being able to support the lung capacity of giant condors and tigers, but not a human boy? Earth is now subjected to extreme climate shifts where everything literally freezes overnight. Even if this were possible the vegetation is that of a tropical/sub-tropical zone foliage, a temperature change like this every single night would kill off any forest fairly quick.

As I said earlier this movie lacked a "wow" factor that I was expecting at some point. I would have liked some vestige of mans previous existence like the Egyptian sphinx covered in now tropical vegetation which would have been a visually impressive scene and one that would need no further explanation, much like the decayed statue of liberty at the end of the original Planet of the Apes. It's the lack of this kind of visual effect and also the tedium of Will Smiths role being relegated to nothing more than the voice of reason, as his son hogged most of the limelight. The film is good but not great so don't expect to get blown away with this one. E-value : 7.5/10 Acting : 8/10 (Will Smith and Jaden Smith), 6/10 (for other cast) Plot : 6.5/10

'Danger is real. Fear is a Choice'..

Never mind with the lukewarm response nor panned by movie critics generally, I'm going to be resilient on my entire spectrum falls for After Earth. However, before I had this movie watched, my skeptical whims told me otherwise - the Smith's Pageantry (alas Will Smith's made up story to get his son Jaden Smith on board) plus another episodic Shymalan's flick fallout lineup.

After Earth kicked off a little stretchy at spades though, but the moment when seeing Kitai (Jaden Smith) headed out to the precarious woods in order to seek for their beacon, I started to get attached to the film. The plot in this brand new sci-fi is not far from fetch at all, to be frank despite it isn't blaringly praised as 'original' as Avatar but it certainly served up a bit penance to the flop in Shymalan's The Last Airbender. The evolutionary theory of a millennium ahead as introduced in the story is brilliant and realistic approach. Will Smith had bridged this scientific proved point of views with the film that bursting with emotional ride. But all to all, there was still one minor loophole. It could have been better to add in more details on how the extraterrestrial invasion of Ursa to turn earth becomes inhabitable to humanity.

It felt good to explore the callous Raige (Will Smith) who was having difficulties to demonstrate his paternal vibes to his son, Kitai to his character development as the story progressed. Starring opposite Will, his son in real life too, Jaden Smith, the energy comes out from this little kiddo - raw and unpretentious all the way. Notably his father is Will Smith, Jaden didn't try hard to impersonate the 'legend' actor either. I think Jaden Smith is literally unique in his own way. "Danger is real, but fear is a choice" among others good script-lines commodities to be found in this flick.

I was totally fascinated on the aesthetically projected IMAX visual effect s, special effects and also CGI (esp baboon) that measured up to two mega sci-fi - Avatar and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Last but not least – Kudos to the choreographer who arranged the climatic showdown in between Kitai and the humanity nemesis, Ursa. Shyamalan is clearly a director-for-hire here, his disinterest palpable from first frame to last. Nowhere in evidence is the gifted "Sixth Sense" director who once brought intricately crafted setpieces and cinematic sleight-of-hand to even the least of his own movies. a5c7b9f00b
