When a freak hurricane swamps Los Angeles, nature's deadliest killer rules sea, land, and air as thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged populace. Far from great, and it is easy for anybody- regardless of whether they are taking it too seriously or not- to criticise it, but Sharknado is also one of SyFy's/The Asylum's more tolerable and most fun to watch movies. That is saying a lot actually because usually with a few exceptions they are terrible(sometimes irredeemably so) There are some negatives that is difficult to overlook. The worst asset was the acting of Tara Reid, she doesn't look as though she was having any fun at all and acted at times like a porn actress trying to act, very mechanical and ill at ease. John Heard also has moments where he overacts to a painful degree, but still he looks as though he's trying so he isn't as problematic. The next worst thing were the special effects(nearly always one of the worst assets of their movies, so that was expected), they are some of the better effects to appear in SyFy's/The Asylum's output but the fact that they look so artificial and though they were made in a rush doesn't make that say very much. Thankfully, the melodrama and exposition is mostly kept minimal, but when Sharknado does go into that territory it falls flat with some overwrought clunkiness and where things lag slightly, not a surprise because exposition and melodrama has always been one of SyFy's/The Asylum's weak points. And if you are looking to see if there is any plausible science, look for another movie because the science here is rather dumb and impossible, enough to make scientists or anybody studying or teaching it despair.

Flaws aside, the exotic locations and photography that looks as though effort was made into making what was happening on screen coherent made for a movie that for how bad the effects are was serviceable technically. The music has a couple of creepy moments without being too derivative, but generally it stays true to the snappy tongue-in-cheek nature of the writing and story. The script can go overboard with the corniness at times but mostly it is witty and tongue-in-cheek, the banter is very amusing and the "looks like it's that time of the month" line is a classic, as well as snappily delivered. As for the story, really we can tell from the premise alone what to expect from Sharknado and what the quality is going to be. Reading the premise, it was clear that Sharknado was going to be ridiculous. And it was, and it was also clear that the movie and those behind it knew it as well. The difference was though that it was entertaining too(and the most original SyFy/The Asylum have had in a long time), the movie is surprisingly well paced and actually has a cohesive structure at times, helped by that it's not as melodrama/exposition-heavy as some of their other movies and that it actually knows what to do with itself. The sharks are not very well designed, but they actually have a personality, sometimes menacing but often with a goofy sense of fun, which makes their scenes fun. Their scenes admittedly are hilariously chaotic and incredibly dumb but interweave within the nature of the story very well, there are even scenes that are bust-a-gut-laughing-worthy, like character chainsawing their way out of a shark. The characters are not well developed, neither are they annoying. Likewise the acting isn't award worthy, but there's been much worse. The best of the lot is Ian Ziering, he's very funny and has good charisma, the character starts out a little obnoxious but you actually grow to like him.

All in all, not a great movie with some obvious flaws and maybe overpraised by some reviewers, but it is a lot of fun to watch and for a SyFy/Asylum movie it is one of their better ones. Not a 10/10 movie but nowhere near bad enough for a 1. Personal rating would be a 6/10, sort of a decent/guilty pleasure rating. Bethany Cox I was extremely excited for this movie, as were a lot of other people apparently. The concept behind the movie was awesome, so much so that I doubt the creators realized it would generate so much interest. Perhaps they would have put in a little more effort otherwise. It is literally the worst-filmed movie I have ever seen. Kids in college working on school projects submit far better work to Sundance. This thing is bad! And it's so bad that it's more frustrating than funny, because the concept actually has real potential. If the concept were given to someone like Quentin Tarantino this could have been a real fun Grindhouse-style flick.

I have so many issues with this movie not sure where to start. I'll try to break it down.

  • It looks like it was filmed with a 90's home cam corder. Even in the same scene when they change angles the lighting clearly doesn't match up. It's like they had only two cameras available and they were completely different crappy models and they couldn't get the lighting to match and also didn't know how to fix it digitally afterwards.

  • Regardless of the camera quality, the cinematography is just plain bad. In a single scene the camera angle bounces all over the place and it's extremely hard to tell what the heck is going on. I think maybe this was aimed at hiding their bad graphics, but it didn't work. We still saw the bad graphics, but were totally disoriented. I mean like there would be a scene where someone is being bit by a shark, but you can't see it happening. Looks like they filmed the movie in a single day and that half of it was constructed using clips of sharks from youtube.

  • Wow, bad graphics. Kids with pirated software manage to put together way better graphics than you'll find in this film. As with the camera quality it looks like they have computers and software from the 90s.

  • Worst plot ever. With this awesome concept that is the best story they could come up with? Where is the sharknado? The Sharknado is the whole point of the movie, but there is actually very little of this. The tornado comes near the end. And this should be where we get all kinds of carnage, but instead they suspend the action to have some drama and make propane bombs and then fly a helicopter over to the tornado to deliver the bombs, which then cause the tornados to go away? What? No sharks flying around eating people. It's just stupid. I know the movie is stupid and totally unrealistic to begin with, but part of making an unrealistic movie fun and good is building up a realistic plot to support the unrealistic concept. And that means not suspending the laws of physics. Helicopters can't fly into tornados, and bombs, certainly not tiny little propane cans, can't be used to "blow up" a tornado. We wanted to see sharks flying around getting people, not this helicopter nonsense.

  • Note I didn't say anything about the acting? Of course the acting was bad, but we expected it to be bad. It was the only thing that lived up to my expectations.

  • Side note, what the heck has happened to Tara Reid? She is looking pretty worn these days.
When Hurricane David moves up the Mexican coast toward southern California, it brings with it massive waves, torrential rains, and a huge influx of man-eating sharks. Santa Monica Pier restaurant owner, surfing legend Finley "Fin" Shepard (Ian Ziering), fearing for the safety of his estranged wife April (Tara Reid) and daughter Candice (Heather Jocelyn Blair), tries to make it to their house in Beverly Hills. Accompanied by his Tasmanian friend Baz Hogan (Jason Simmons), waitress Nova Clarke (Cassandra Scerbo), and steady bar customer George (John Heard) (and George's bar stool), the four of them brave floods that bring sharks up through the sewers and waterspouts (tornadoes over the ocean) that rain sharks from the sky. Sharknado is a made-for-television disaster film based on a screenplay by Thunder Levin. It was followed by Sharknado 2: The Second One (2014) (2014), Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! (2015) (2015), Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens (2016) (2016), and Sharknado 5: Global Swarming (2017) (2017). Yes, there are several scenes that seem to pay homage to the mother of all shark movies, Jaws (1975) (1975). For example, when the crowds are scrambling to get off the Santa Monica Pier, there is a scene where Baz shoves an oxygen tank down a shark's mouth and Fin blows it up with gunshot, similar to a scene in Jaws. In another scene, Nova compares scars with Fin's son Matt (Charles Hittinger) in a manner reminiscent of Quint (Robert Shaw) and Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) on the Orca one-upping each other with their scars. This is followed by Nova's explanation of how she got the scar and why she is afraid of sharks. She ends by saying "Six people went into the water and one little girl came out. The sharks took the rest." just like Quint's description of the Indianapolis. Finally, toward the end of the movie, when Matt and Nova are flying over the waterspouts in a helicopter, Nova exclaims, "We're gonna need a bigger chopper" (Jaws: "You're gonna need a bigger boat"). Matt and Nova's attempt to drop bombs into the tornadoes, on the idea that the bombs will kill the sharks and also equalize the mixture of warm and cold air that created the waterspouts, proves successful on the first two of the three tornadoes. While Fin shoots the sharks as they fall from the sky, Matt and Nova go after the third and largest tornado, but the bomb doesn't land right and Nova falls out of the chopper. On the way down, she is gulped up by a large shark. On the ground, Fin drives the bomb-laden Humvee into the third tornado, jumping out just as the Humvee drives into it. The explosion neutralizes the tornado, but Fin is swallowed by a great white as the sharks begin to fall from the sky. Fortunately, Fin was carrying a chainsaw and, moments later, he is able to saw himself out of the shark's belly. He reaches back in and pulls out a blood-covered but still alive Nova. In the final scene, Matt asks Nova about her real name, and she replies, "Jenny Lynn." April kisses Fin, and the four of them turn to look over the shark-covered tarmac. No. Waterspouts and hurricanes have, however, deposited many smaller animals, like frogs and fish, in populated areas. See here. a5c7b9f00b
