A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.
When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
An alien race of parasites have conquered the world. They took over the bodies of most humans with just a few who has escaped joining. Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) is captured and an alien called Wanderer is put into her body. Only Melanie's mind survives, and the two coexist as they search for the last pure humans. Diane Kruger plays the Seeker who wants to root out the last human resistance.
The concept is problematic at best. It seems unlikely that the humans could survive or that the aliens wouldn't be able to root them out. And it's ridiculous to have so much screen time worrying about who loves Melanie and who loves the Wanderer when the world has been conquered. Also it seems so ridiculously simple to fool the aliens. And the tension in the movie is drained away when the aliens declare that they aren't going to look for those free humans. The whole thing just can't hold. And I haven't even discussed how slow this was.
I should preface this by noting that my daughter (9) and her friend (10) enjoyed this film. I'm used to watching films aimed at a younger audience but seriously, I would rather stick hot needles in my eyes that watch this again. There is a moment (spoiler alert) towards the end of the film where the, ahem, heroine says, "I just want to die". I could not help myself from saying out loud, "Me too".
We're do I start? Firstly, the film is so slow it almost stops altogether at times. Secondly, the plot is so preposterous that it is an insult to the intelligence. We are invited to believe that the earth has been taken over by aliens whose method of entry into the host is that a human has to make an incision into the neck and then coax the alien into the body. So how, prey, did the first alien make its way into the host? The aliens are peace-loving types who, apparently, don't possess weapons, yet somehow they have subdued the whole of planet earth. Humans may have their faults, but lying down and being walked over en mass is surely not one of them. Especially in America. Inexplicably, the aliens police force-the Seekers- drive around in high end sports cars or motor bikes painted silver, which apparently renders them bullet-proof, yet they don't have a response to the human resistance who shoot at them.
There is a sequence in the middle of the film which reveals the cynical intent of the writer and director to tap into adolescent hormones. The heroin, partially posed by an alien, spends seemingly hours kissing a procession of identical looking farm boys, while the human mind previously resident in the body remonstrated with the alien, for reasons never entirely clear. This is possibly the most uncomfortable and irritating hour I have ever spent in the cinema.
At the end the director desperately tries to contour up an emotional moment but by the stage I would have been unmoved by genocide. Awful awful awful.
The movie, based on the novel by Stephenie Meyer of “Twilight” fame and directed by Andrew Niccol, is just kind of dumb. Like the more famous books and movies, about a love triangle between a vampire, a werewolf and a human girl, it often plays like a teenage girl’s idea of how literary romances play out.
