Ip Man's peaceful life in Foshan changes after Gong Yutian seeks an heir for his family in Southern China. Ip Man then meets Gong Er who challenges him for the sake of regaining her family's honor. After the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong and struggles to provide for his family. In the mean time, Gong Er chooses the path of vengeance after her father was killed by Ma San. The story of martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee. I loved Edmond Wong's "Ip Man" and "Ip Man 2", so I was excited to see this movie from another writer/director. No kidding, but I knew in the very first scene that this movie was going to be disappointing. The fight scene in the rain at night - remember? Too artsy. The whole movie was so artsy with mostly irritating music (albeit probably period-appropriate music, of course). I mean, there was more focus on snowflakes falling into a puddle with cherry blossoms reflecting as the camera went in and out of focus. Blah. I do not recommend this movie to anyone unless they are Wing Chun or Ip Man fanatics. Even so, it will not be really well liked by someone who wants to learn about the man and the art of Wing Chun. It seemed to focus on other people in his life moreso than Ip Man himself. Donnie Yen (in the Edmond Wong versions) is so endearing...I was worried about Tony Leung Chiu Wai's performance. While the film (again) did not focus enough on his character, he did an excellent job when on screen. I was pleased with him and his performance, as well as Ziyi Zhang, that they are the only reason I gave this movie 3 stars. Now go watch the Edmond Wong version(s) if you have not already! :-) THE GRANDMASTER is an arthouse retelling of the Ip Man story, here directed by Wong Kar Wai, the man who is loved by critics but who always fails to impress me. As far as I'm concerned, the excellent Donnie Yen trilogy has already portrayed the life and career of the martial arts expert in the best way possible, and THE GRANDMASTER can't hope to compete. It doesn't. It's a film shot through with the director's usual stylings, emphasising visual beauty and careful photography throughout, but messing up the telling of Ip Man's life story in the process. It seems oddly low budget throughout, skipping over huge chunks of history and focusing instead on character rivalries and philosophy. The fight scenes, which should be electrifying with Yuen Woo Ping behind them, are sloppily and shot too close up, leaving them confusing more than anything. The CGI effects are remarkably poor, like the silly fight next to the speeding train. An ageing Ziyi Zhang also fails to raise any interest. The boring, drawn-out dialogue scenes are what really drag this one down. This is a story told in shards; Wong is so obsessed with visual details – faces refracted as if in a broken mirror, or fragile arcs of blood being traced out on the pavement by the feet of two feuding kung fu masters – that the story he’s trying to tell is partly obscured by them. a5c7b9f00b
