Story kicks off with the mysterious murder of a senator bearing the marks of a Soviet assassin, who was long thought to be dead. To hunt down the killer, a retired CIA operative, who spent his career going toe-to-toe with his Soviet nemesis, is teamed with a young FBI agent.
If you have not seen the Trailer for The Double...DON'T!! As many reviewers have pointed out, for whatever reason, they give away the major twist right in the trailer for The Double and I think I wouldn't have been as impressed with the film had I known the twist in advance which I did not. Some might call The Double formulaic and in some aspects it is but that doesn't always mean the movie is a write off. If the formula works then so be it. I think that the film added some depth and some good action and some well shot scenes and an intelligent twisting plot that added some fresh style to the 'aging retired agent' taking the 'young hot headed new agent under his wing' scenario. The film essentially pits the two against each other and against the killer they are chasing and they have terrific chemistry which really helps move the film along. The second major twist to the story is almost a little too forced and feels too last minute to be plausible but it still makes the thriller that much more interesting.
Richard Gere is not the box office draw he once was but I still idolize the guy. I think he is an incredible actor and has done some of the best work in Hollywood films. In this film he shows a certain gritty dark jaded quality that makes his retired CIA agent really fascinating. He definitely has a multi layered character that unravels with each twist to the story and he carries the film like the old pro that he is. Topher Grace does a great job playing the young ambitious new analyst looking to take over Gere's position as the expert on a certain killer. Grace and Gere have great chemistry opposite each other and I wish they had explored their relationship even more than they did but Grace gives a solid, very real, very good performance. Martin Sheen has an unfortunately small role as Gere's former mentor. He instantly adds an elevated level of class to the movie but his cameo is too small so we don't get to see a lot from him. Tamer Hassan is a Russian assassin that they are all chasing. He does well in the role but doesn't stand out and gets very little in the way of a character arc.
I'm not sure why a film like this wouldn't get a bigger more profound theater release rather than essentially going straight to video because the film is good, very entertaining, very smart, well made and well paced action flick. There are some terrific action scenes including the climactic car chase and gun fight at the end which culminates the film perfectly. I was actually very surprised to see this was co-writer's Michael Brandt's very first directorial film because he handled it very well. He clearly has an eye and a style for action films. I would have perhaps liked to see a little more character development in a few key areas and I would have liked to have seen more of the dynamic between Grace and Gere but regardless this is a solidly entertaining movie. 8.5/10
One of the major problems with 'The Double' is the trailer advertising it. If you've seen it, it tells you most of the story (and one of the twists). However, I only found that out by reading the internet forums about this movie. I suppose I fortunate enough not to see the trailer, hence I quite enjoyed finding out what was happening as it went along.
It's nothing too revolutionary - old dog spy (Gere) paired with up and coming spy (Grace) - it's effectively a mismatch/buddy-cop film but with spies. It flits between action and talking, with a few surprises thrown into the mix. Plus it isn't too long, so it fits everything in and quite nicely.
But, although it's a decent watch, it probably could have been better. It gives away one of the surprises too early, which may lead some to lose interest. However, at least there are a few more twists to come which I'm guessing the writer hoped would make up for it.
In short, it's not bad, but not a classic. Plus, avoid watching its trailer at all costs. Long gone are the days when a trailer is made to tease and draw you to a movie without revealing anything. I decided to watch the trailer AFTER I'd seen the film and I can see what people meant about it. I really don't know what the film-makers were doing with the trailer - it's effectively a ninety minute film condensed into a couple of minutes.
Overall this is a decent and entertaining production for which you have to keep expectations low on all levels in order to enjoy it.
A barely warm dish of Cold War leftovers that shows its hand too early, then works itself into an increasingly implausible tangle of knotty plot developments without ever mustering much intensity.
