Surviving the destruction of the planet Krypton, young Kal-El is sent by his father Jor-El to live among mankind on Earth. Under the parenting of Jonathan and Martha Kent, Clark Kent discovers that he was born with extraordinary powers and abilities beyond imagination. Now living in Metropolis, Clark takes up a job as a reporter for the Daily Planet and starts to fall head over heals for fellow reporter Lois Lane. But then Clark is also using his powers to help the better of mankind as Superman, who the people of Metropolis start turning to for help. But in the shadows, criminal genius Lex Luthor launches a sinister plan to make himself known by detonating two missiles in different parts of the country with only Superman to oppose him. Will Superman save us? Or will Luthor's plan succeed? An alien orphan is sent from his dying planet to Earth, where he grows up to become his adoptive home's first and greatest superhero. When he fails to convince the ruling council that his planet will be destroyed in a matter of weeks, Jor-El loads his only son into a space pod and blasts him to earth knowing that his denser mass will make him stronger and faster and thus more likely to survive childhood. The pod crashes in a corn field and the boy is taken in by a kindly farming couple who very quickly have realised that the boy is special. When he is 18 Clark learns more about his past and sets out as an adult. He comes to Metropolis and takes a job as a journalist for the daily Planet but it is not long before one of his colleagues is in danger and he is forced to done his outfit and save her, also exposing himself to the media at the same time. And so, Superman is born and crime has a new foe – but it is not long before a criminal thinks he has the making of the man of steel.

Modern audiences will perhaps miss the dark substances, anti-heroes and moral complexities that tend to accompany our superheroes in films recently but this film has stood the test of time well as a colourful and family-friendly superhero action. Personally I prefer the complexity that well done comic book movies of recent years have brought but this film does what it does and it does it pretty well. Spending most of the first hour on setting up the history of the character before gradually moving into "hero/villain" areas, the story is gentle but enjoyable enough to fill the running time. If anything the conclusion seems rushed, like they knew they had to do something big but didn't have time to build to it properly. If anything the second half is weaker than the first as a result and the hero/villain side of the story would become more integral in the rest of the series as the introductions had all been made. That said it all moves forward well enough and all the bits do work reasonably well and produces a good slice of family entertainment.

Reeves is well cast as Superman; he is not brilliant but he fits the role well and doesn't take it too seriously too often. Kidder is reasonably good as Lois, although again her performance wasn't anything special. It helps that the two work quite well together within the genre – this covers quite a lot of their individual weaknesses. Brando turns up and takes his cash, and that's about it. Hackman may not be used as well as he could have been but he is very hammy and enjoyable and he really does breath life into the film every time he comes on screen. Beatty is good in a minor comedic role alongside him and Perrine looks great and fits her character as well as she fits some of her outfits. Cooper, Ford and others provide good support and match the comic book tone well.

Overall this is a fine piece of comic book family fun. For many (me included) the bright colours and lack of real meat to the film will be a disappointment but this isn't really the place for such things. The story is good for the first hour and just about keeps working for the second half, despite the sudden rush to an underdone hero/villain scenario and most viewers will find something to enjoy here. This is my favorite movie of all time...I had to start by saying that. I am a huge Superman fan and to have a movie like this representing my favorite superhero is astounding.

This is a great movie because of the great mix of fantasy, drama, action and the care taken in presenting this classic story with what Richard Donner called Verisimilitude--the appearance of being true or real; likeness or resemblance of the truth. Even though this is a fictional story they treat it with a sense of reality and truth. They respect this American Icon that has been a part of our culture for many years and will continue to endure.

As a kid I was astounded at seeing my hero flying freely through the air--catching Lois Lane as she falls from the helicopter, watching him rescue Air Force One from crashing, chasing rockets, saving California from falling into the ocean and even taking the time to do the little things like rescuing a cat from a tree. I remember the excitement as Clark Kent first appeared as Superman, running across the street and ripping open his shirt to reveal that famous "S". It was my comic book fantasy brought to life.

When I got older, I still feel those things but I noticed so much more. Chris Reeve totally embodies this character with such grace and charisma that I don't see an actor in a blue suit and red cape, I see Superman and Clark Kent. The way he portrays both characters is totally distinct. Watch the scene after Superman drops Lois Lane off at her balcony and then Clark Kent arrives to take her out. When he takes off his glasses and almost reveals himself to her as the dashing superhero you can see the change take place and believe why no one can penetrate his disguise. Look at the reactions of people as they see Superman in action, the awe he inspires. Chris made that believable--he is Superman.

The movie itself is a masterpiece; the script is well written and conceived. Richard Donner brings us movie that sparks the imagination and makes you enjoy the ride from start to finish. Mario Puzo gave him a great script to work with and Tom Mankiewicz added the final touches to make it the best it could be. All the actors brought their characters to life in a way that makes you care and believe. Great care was taken in each of the 3 acts of this movie from Krypton to Smallville to Metropolis. Each world has a unique look and feel of their own and help to bring the story to life and build Kal-El into Clark Kent and finally to Superman. The world of Krypton is beautiful and majestic, we get a great yet brief look into the home world of the Man of Steel and learn of the destruction that brought him to Earth. In Smallville we see where Clark's humanity and compassion come from in the form of Jonathan and Martha Kent, his adoptive parents and where Clark learns that his destiny begins to call him to something greater. After his journey to the frozen north and his tutelage in the Fortress of Solitude from Jor-El he learns to embrace his destiny and become the greatest hero the world has ever known. Then we hit Metropolis, BAM, comic book come to life. From there we follow the adventures of Clark and his new found alter ego as he brings his amazing powers to the aid of the people of Earth.

Marlon Brando was a perfect choice for Jor-El. He fit the role like a glove and had a very commanding presence without being overpowering. He was a great father figure and role model for Kal-El. He instilled the qualities that would allow Kal-El to embrace his heritage and become the symbol of hope for Earth, the "light to show the way." Phyllis Thaxter and Glenn Ford were terrific as Clark's adoptive parents. They gave him humanity and always made him feel loved and accepted no matter how different their son felt. They didn't care where he came from they loved him and knew that he would be a great influence on his adopted home world.

Margot Kidder was brilliant as Lois. She captured the tenacity and toughness of the character as well as the googly-eyed, love struck girl she becomes around Superman so well. She was tough and smart and took charge. Around Clark she is very confident and a bit constructively critical. Around Superman she loses all of that and becomes a lovesick little kid who dreams of the shining knight in a red cape. Plus, she has the absolutely brilliant knack of getting into situations that only Superman can pull her out of.

Lex Luthor, brought to life in the most astounding way by Gene Hackman. Brilliant, menacing, criminal genius bent on committing the biggest real estate scam on Earth and not caring who he hurts along the way. He is menacing without being scary, he's confidant yet bored with the ease he can outwit and outdo anyone he comes across. Then comes Superman, the adversary he's been waiting for. It's not an obstacle for him, it's a challenge.

As far as musical scores go, you can't get any better than John Williams. His theme for Superman still gives me chills as I hear it during the main titles or while Superman is in action. It fits the character perfectly and gives the greatest hero his greatest theme that is exciting and inspiring.

Visually, emotionally, and fantasy fulfilling this movie has it all. It's a magical, cinematic journey for young and old alike and will endure the test of time. It's inspirational, it helps us to believe that Superman is out there in some fashion to help us. As the tagline says...You Will Believe a Man Can Fly. Superman the Movie will always fly high. Boasts a smart screenplay by Robert Benton and David and Leslie Newman, striking cinematography by Geoffrey Unsworth (especially in the Smallville sequence), bright comic turns by Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman, and of course, that winning performance by Christopher Reeve in the title role. Believe a man can fly? You bet! The movie Superman (1978) located the fictional U.S. town where the baby Kal-El was found and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in the state of Kansas. This tradition has carried through into subsequent Superman comic-book stories, animation, and television series. Earlier comics however placed Smallville in the north-eastern United States, somewhere near the eastern seaboard. Also, some comics-related sources in the 1970s and '80s placed Smallville in the state of Maryland. In the TV series Smallville, Smallville has been established as being located in the state of Kansas and also close enough to Metropolis that on clear days, one can view it in the distance. Metropolis is a fictional port city located somewhere on the eastern seaboard of the U.S. Where exactly varies depending on the source. The four superman movies made in 1978, 1980, 1983, and 1987 staring Christopher Reeve, do not specify its location, but based on the existence of various real-life landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, it must be a stand-in for New York City. In the DC Universe, it is considered to be in New York State (which also is said to be geographically larger than its real-life counterpart). Some sources had previously placed Metropolis on the shore of Delaware Bay in the state of Delaware, across from Gotham City (from the Batman universe). However, this has been superseded by more recent continuity. In the latest Superman movie, Superman Returns, when Lex Luthor unveils his plan on a series of maps, Metropolis can be seen located on a Northeastern U.S. map exactly where New York City would be. (Also, on a side note, Long Island is not present at all.) In the TV series Smallville, Metropolis must be located either in Kansas, or close by in a neighboring state, as the show has established that (1) Smallville is in Kansas and that (2) Metropolis can be seen from town on clear days in the distance. At this point in Clark Kent's life, he has not yet fully developed, super-power wise. He has varying degrees of some of his powers, while others not at all, including the ability to fly. That is why he runs super fast home, instead of simply flying. The effect was achieved by dangling the actor just above the ground with wires, and having a fast moving rig pull him across the intended path. In some shots, it was clearly blue-screened though. Once he turned back time, he then had the time to stop Lex Luthor's guided missles, and in effect, prevented the earthquakes, etc. The controversy surrounding the time-reversal theme of the movie has been a discussion point since the film came out. Most viewers see it as a cheat, others see it as a ridiculous way for Superman to save Lois. Either way, Richard Donner has commented very little on his choice to include it. We have to assume that, although he turned back time to a point before the dam really breaking through (as is clearly seen being reversed), he did not take it back further than that, to before the explosion (crucially, we do not see that being reversed). Presumably, he is only prepared to defy Jor-El's warnings to a certain extent, otherwise why not reverse the whole thing and save all those killed in the nuclear blast and quake, messing seriously with "Earth history"? So, he simply had a little bit more time, which he used to save Jimmy a bit earlier (it is clear that he still did so and deposited him on the road, because Jimmy says so when he arrives at the car at the end) and also to deal with the damaged dam, perhaps not needing to stop the deluge because this time he has enough time to repair the damage before it bursts completely. He also somehow prevents the crack that reaches Lois' car, though she has still experienced the quake/aftershocks and the exploding gas station (she says as much). And of course, Luthor's huge crime has still taken place and so he must go to jail and for trial. She asks him about this during their interview: "Is it true that you can see through anything?" He then states specifically that he can see through anything but lead (when she steps out from behind the lead plant box she has on her terrace, he says "pink", giving an answer to her question about what color underwear she'd had on). Lois is primed with a lot of questions, though we are not privy as to how she knows to ask this one. Also, the printed article Lex Luthor et al. read the next day, "I spent the night with Superman", contains details about him that we do not see Lois and Superman discussing. So, we must simply assume that various rumors and facts had leaked out prior to the interview, during Superman's first few appearances, somehow (we do see him talking to Jor-El about his having been "showing off" and now being "revealed to the world") and a lot more putting the record straight must have taken place off-camera, while Lois is interviewing (flying with) Superman. In the original Superman comic book universe, it is safe to assume some, if not all, characters have trouble coming to this conclusion. In real life, although it is possible for a person to recognize Clark Kent, or Superman vice versa, there are numerous people who found they could conceal their identity from at least strangers with a single facial detail like Harold Lloyd (who was an inspiration for Clark Kent) with his glasses or Charlie Chaplin and Groucho Marx with their artificial mustaches. This was probably left out for plot reasons, and to allow a longer running series.

If the comic book series bordered too close to real life, with rational and smart characters, Superman would never have survived this long. His identity would have been deduced very early, and his closest friends and relatives would have been systematically killed. In the modern comics, the disguise has been supported by the fact that the public does not know that Superman have a secret identity since he does not wear a mask, suggesting he has nothing to hide. Furthermore, he has had the help of shapeshifters like the Martian Manhunter who have posed as Clark Kent with Superman in public appearances to make it seem obvious they are two separate people.

More than the glasses, the Clark Kent disguise consists of a completely different personality. Christopher Reeve was chosen, in part, because of his ability to play two completely different characters. Kal-el takes Jor-el's advice that his secret identity is absolutely necessary to heart and develops the Clark Kent persona in order to keep humans from over-relying on Superman and to protect those he loves. Clark Kent is a bumbling, "mild-mannered reporter", easily dismissed by Lois and everyone else; Superman is confident and charismatic with a witty sense of humor. Lois even considers the possibility that they are one and the same and then, considering Clark's personality, dismisses the notion as ridiculous. The skill of Reeve in portraying the identities is demonstrated in this film when Clark is tempted to confess in Lois' apartment; the sight of him simply taking off his glasses, straightening his back and speaking with unexpected timbre has a convincing effect of suggesting another person. In the year 2000, the Director's Cut of Superman was released. Most of the new material are smaller sequences with plot extensions, but there are two bigger sequences added as well. The first one shows Superman in the Fortress of Solitude, talking to his father Jor-El about the advantage of his supernatural powers. The second one shows Luthor trying to stop Superman by the use of heavy arms, fire and ice. The 4-Disc Special Edition is a Must Have for each fan of this film because it's the only DVD release including the Director's Cut and the theatrical cut as well. a5c7b9f00b
