What if the world was full of superheroes who aren't actually heroic at all? What if all their powers were just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder and endorsement deals? Enter the men and women of the powers division, the brave people in charge of protecting humans like us and keeping the peace over commercialised, God-like men and women who glide through the sky imposing their power over the mortals who both worship and fear them. Based on the graphic novel by Michael Avon Oeming and Brian Michael Bendis, the edgy and dramatic Powers follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley) and Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward), who are assigned to investigate these cases.
Set in a world where humans and super heroes co-exist, a homicide detective, who had his own powers taken from him, investigates crimes involving superhumans along with his partner.
This is a blatant ripoff of the Brandon Sanderson "The Reckoners". Some details are changed but the premise is essentially the same. Some of the "powers" are actually identical to those in the book.
OK, the actual program. The lead actor seems a little unsure of himself, does not stand up straight, and seems to be always slouching in his seat - even when he's not sitting down. Stand up straight man, be more alpha! His sidekick was decent, could be better, I'd like to see her acting more professional and to be better dressed.
Retro girl was good, I like her attitude in this just like I liked her kick ass attitude in BSG. She behaves appropriately for a jaded but "good" super.
Calista was extremely annoying. Her script seems to not connect to anyone else, it's almost as if she was written to be a bit retarded.
The world, the perception and attitude of normal people towards those with powers: again straight out of "the Reckoners" book by Brandon Sanderson. A mixture of Awe and Fear, where the most powerful exist outside of the law regardless of their behavior.
It's a decent "super" series. It has a lot of mileage and a lot of room for improvement. But definitely a ripoff of someone else's work.
First off a correction to the various misconceptions by earlier reviews on IMDb. This show is based on a comic book that appeared 6 years earlier than Heroes TV show and 13 years before the Reckoners book series. I'd posit that those works were probably influenced by Powers (and other comics of the time (Watchmen anyone?).
I was very disappointed in the pilot episode for the unnecessary massive info dump from of all people Mario Lopez as an on screen celebrity reporter. The pilot seemed like it had been shot cheaply and clearly seems written as network sales pitch episode and it doesn't fit with the more nuanced better 2nd and 3rd episodes I've seen. Third episode redeemed the pilot in all aspects. The direction, script and acting all made me accept the sometimes dramatic differences to the source comic book series.
