After an experimental bio-nerve gas is accidentally released at a remote U.S. military base in Texas, those exposed to the gas turn into flesh-eating, mutating zombies out to kill. An assortment of various people who include stripper Cherry, her shady mechanic ex-boyfriend Wray, a strong-willed doctor, the local sheriff, and an assortment of various people must join forces to survive the night as the so-called "sickos" threaten to take over the whole town and the world. In Texas, the gang leaded by the black market dealer Abby faces a group of renegade militaries leaded by Captain Muldoon in an abandoned military base. During their shootout, Abby shoots a recipient of biological weapon, releasing an experimental highly-contagious gas that turns humans to flesh-eating zombies. Meanwhile, in the local hospital, Dr. Block sees an epidemic with many patients with the same nasty symptoms. When the outbreak affects most of the local population, a group of people with immunity leaded by the mechanic Wray, Sheriff Hague, the stripper Cherry and the Dr. Dakota, fight to survive and become the last hope to save the world. Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino collaborate to make an action-horror double feature known as Grindhouse, where the movies are filmed to obtain the looks of old exploitation films from the 70s and 80s. With Quentin Tarantino's action feature 'Death Proof' dealing with a psychotic Hollywood stuntman preying a woman with his black Chevrolet Nova, this half directed by Robert Rodriguez pays a homage to vintage zombie horror B-movies with over-the-top action and blood and gore. This feature follows Cherry (played by Rose McGowan), a sexy stripper with a shady ex-boyfriend Wray (played by Freddy Rodriguez) living in a small Texas town that soon becomes under attacked when a biomedical experiment goes awry and releases a toxic gas that mutates people into gruesome, flesh-eating monsters. Cherry, Wray, and her father join alliance with Dakota Block (played by Marley Shelton), a nurse and mother who is secretly cheating on her husband Will (played by Josh Brolin), local sheriff Hague (played by Michael Biehn), and several other town residents to fight against the flesh-eating zombie onslaught that threaten their town. Bruce Willis makes an appearance as an army lieutenant who witnesses the downfall of the experiment that leads the town in extreme turmoil.

Opening a fake movie trailer starring Danny Trejo as the action hero "Machete" who makes an appearance in many of Rodriguez's later films, this film, in my opinion, offers a bit more excitement and storytelling than Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof'. It brings the intense zombie action and aggressively over-the-top blood and gore to make every zombie fan blush, not to mention a surprisingly likable cast including Quentin Tarantino makes a cameo appearance. With the vintage cinematography, the film pays a solid homage to the classic action and horror flicks that gained pop cult status in later years of their release. However, the main flaw is that director Robert Rodriguez takes his vintage filming style a bit too seriously, to the point of it being needlessly distracting. The grainy film format can be diverting enough for those not in favor of a degenerate style of filmmaking. The style only becomes more off- putting with the absurdly awkward editing, one example lies at the halfway point with the movie breaking into a brief intermission with the sight of a simulated film reel burning obliviously, filling the screen with flames, and then skipping a portion of the film's storyline. Rodriguez seems to embrace the filmmaking style highly over the characters to where the cinematography serves more as the star of the film than the characters. Those who are able to look past the distracting cinematography, however, will find luxury in the fast-paced plot, the intoxicating zombie shootouts, and Rose McGowan's character mowing down with her machine gun-replaced leg. The cast's performances are not particularly stand strong, but as the film pays a homage to old films that lacked stellar acting, many may find somewhat forgivable.

Planet Terror is a fun and entertaining zombie action flick, but a bit faulty in terms of style. I personally find this half of Grindhouse more entertaining than 'Death Proof', though Death Proof is slightly improving in cinematography. This film is worth watching for all Robert Rodriguez fans, and a definite no-go for the faint of heart as this film is piled with absurd amount of gore and violence from start to finish. I think this has been the ultimate roller coaster ride, after my boyfriend begged for me to rent Death Proof, which I thought I would hate and he thought he would love, it was the complete opposite, I loved that movie and he hated it. So I was really excited to see Planet Terror, which he didn't wanna see, because he figured if he didn't like Death Proof, why would he like this one? But I was curious because I heard Planet Terror was better, well he loved it, I just thought it was alright. But we both agreed on one thing, boy did this movie take one gigantic turn. It went from this awesome old-school type of zombie flick to a government action movie and not to mention had the most unbelievable situations. Now don't get me wrong, there are some things that I will always let slide, but Rose McGowan's character was complete B.S., with her leg, just she learns how to walk with a table leg in the same night that she lost her real leg? I don't wanna nit pick because at times it was cool, but the story just completely fell apart in the second act.

It starts off as a normal night for some, that is until people on the road are being led to a Military Base camp where there is a deadly virus that is turning the people into brain eating zombies. The virus quickly takes over and people are killing each other all over town. But a group of people are going to do their best to survive the night and beat these killer zombies, if it's the last thing that they do.

While I absolutely loved the beginning, I mean, it had great gore, a fun script, and some hilarious dark comedy, I just loved the Sargent character played by Michael Biehn(who I was so happy to see after so many years) when he tells the group of people "Shoot as many as you can... but don't shoot me!" and then "missing reel" "I can't believe my own deputy shot me!", I couldn't stop laughing. Like I said, I thought the first hour was just great, but the ending just took a complete turn from what I thought this film was going to be. But I would still say to give it a look, you will get a few scares and a few good laughs at least. But I'll just stick to Death Proof.

6/10 The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. Spoiler tags are used sparingly in order to make the page more readable. "Grindhouse (Main Titles)" by Robert Rodriguez. "Too Drunk to Fuck" written by the Dead Kennedys, performed by Nouvelle Vague. "Palomita," which in English translates to "little dove." El Wray also has a dove tattoo on his wrist and Cherry wears a necklace with a dove pendant. Dakota and Tammy were lesbian lovers, as was stated in the film.

Some time after Dakota had married Dr. William Block, she started having an affair with Tammy. William obviously found out about it so Dakota agreed to stop seeing her. Finally when Dakota had got fed up with William's abuse (whether physical or just verbal is never stated though physical abuse is heavily implied) she contacted Tammy to come and pick up Tony and then Dakota would meet them after her shift at the hospital was over and they would all leave the state to start a new life away from William.

However, Tammy is killed by the sickos on her way to pick up Tony and William comes across her body at the hospital and confronts Dakota about it and says "I thought you had stopped seeing her." then shortly after he says "What do I know now my love? That you're a cheating, lying, sack." confirms that Dakota was having an affair with Tammy. Later on When Dakota meets Cherry Darling; she says "I'm Cherry" and Dakota says "You certainly are." implying she's attracted to Cherry. Robert Rodriguez was on the fence about whether or not Tony Block should live. He decided to kill him off and had his character accidentally shoot himself in the head. However, since Tony was played by Rebel Rodriguez (Robert's son), he didn't want to traumatize him and give him nightmares about dying in the movie. While filming the scene where Tony grabs the pistol from the glove box, he actually grabbed a water pistol and it was changed in post-production via CGI to look like a real gun. All of the shots of Tony's corpse were of a dummy, and Rebel never saw it. Rodriguez filmed a bunch of alternate footage of Tony surviving.

Instead of shooting himself in the head, Tony runs out of the car and joins Dakota while she goes inside Earl McGraw's house. Then he's featured in a bunch of scenes with Dakota in the background, and he runs around with her on the army base at the end. This is the reason why Dakota runs off to the second helicopter - to ensure a seat for Tony. However, since Tony was killed off, there's no practical reason why Dakota runs off to the second helicopter in the final version.

In addition to the alternate footage of Tony living, Rodriguez also shot some footage of Tony playing with his pets in the sand on the beach at the end (this is the scene after the end credits). Rodriguez used all of the alternate footage to make a special cut of the movie just for his son, so that Tony lives. Rebel still supposedly doesn't know that he dies in the finished movie. The unrated extended version contains several new/extended scenes:

Skip tells Cherry that she's funny like Chris Rock while they talk in the dressing room.

The Blocks wake up for work. They wake up on opposite sides of the bed, and William tells Dakota to make some coffee as she looks out the window and sees the green gas in the sky.

Dakota Block runs the water in the sink and it cuts to Cherry washing her leg in the bathroom of The Bone Shack. She takes out a piece of glass that lodged into her leg from when she fell by the side of the road earlier.

J.T. opens kitchen door and it transitions to the Blocks arriving at the hospital.

Doc Block explains Joe's wound and asks him how long he's really had it.

Dr. Crane asks Doc Block if he wants to cut off Joe's arm, or at least watch. He says no, and Crane says "suit yourself."

J.T. cuts up some meat and works on his perfect recipe while talking on the phone. He hangs up and goes outside, where he sees a couple of sickos stand by the gas pumps. He offers them some meat, and when they don't respond he assumes that they are from a rival restaurant. He tells them that they'll never get his recipe, then he eats some meat and goes back inside.

Earl McGraw is introduced at the police station. El Wray asks about Ramona, and he says that she's not doing too well. She's dying from lung cancer, from smoking every day. McGraw asks El Wray if he smokes, and he says no. He says that it's probably good that he doesn't, and then he leaves. El Wray lights up a cigarette, and Hague starts to interrogate him about the gun and Cherry's missing leg.

Deputy Tolo panics at the hospital and accidentally shoots an innocent bystander.

El Wray grabs some gloves when he enters the hospital while two sickos eat Paramedic #2. The sicko on the left is Zoe Bell, and they tear into his chest.

After the cops go to The Bone Shack and find J.T., he tastes some sauce and says that he's finally found his perfect recipe. He wonders what the different ingredient is, and Hague tells him that he's tasting his own blood.

When they arrive outside of McGraw's house, Tony shows Dakota that his tooth fell out. When she smiles, he sees her chipped tooth and says that they're toothless buddies.

When Doc Block arrives outside of McGraw's house, he tells Dakota "I'm going to eat your brains and gain your knowledge."

Additional shots during the sex scene.

While in jail at the army base, El Wray asks about using some chemicals to act as an antidote for the gas. Abby tells him that it wouldn't work, and it would cause them to bleed out of every hole in their bodies.

Additional shots in the final action sequence.

Additional shots of the survivors getting into the helicopter. The reel was never filmed in the first place and does not exist. Rodriguez stated that he didn't even want to know what would happen in that reel. In interviews about the film(s), Tarantino & Rodriguez said that missing reels were fairly common in grindhouse theatres of the 1970s, that somehow the reel was either lost or was never shipped in the first place. It's a nostalgic touch by the two. Robert Rodriguez has said he does not know who El Wray is and never wrote a history for the character, leaving it open to interpretation. He is named after the town where the McCoys are headed in The Getaway (1972) (1972), one of both Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's favorite films. (Rodriguez had already paid homage to the film in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) (1996): the Gecko brothers are also going to El Wray.) El Wray is a fictitious, lawless town where all the bad guys hang out -- full of the worst criminals from around the world. Once you go in, you never come out... alive.

Given his highly stylized skills with hand-to-hand combat as well as firearm training, it can be assumed he is a legendary assassin, a highly decorated solider or perhaps some sort of revolutionary folk hero. As when Sheriff Hague says "Had I known you were 'El Wray'..." and then proceeds to concede leadership to El Wray. This takes some work, but all of the above films all exist within the same movie universe. There are several links between all of the movies that can be made.

Warning: spoilers ahead:

The best link is the character ofwho appears in all of the movie's plots.

dies at the start of From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). So this would place From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)'s events at the end of the timeline.

Then there iswho is alive in the Death Proof (2007) segment of Grindhouse (2007), but dies in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003).

There is also the link offrom the Planet Terror (2007) segment of Grindhouse (2007) and the town the thatandwere heading to in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) which was also called "El Wray".

Another link iswho appears in both the Death Proof (2007) and Planet Terror (2007) segments of Grindhouse (2007), and this is the best place to start.is also the daughter ofand sister ofwho also appears in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money (1999).

I think that is most of the links made (there could be more) but from this you can start to piece together the chronology of the universe, so...

The events of Death Proof (2007) must happen before the events of Planet Terror (2007). This can be assumed by the relationship betweenandwhich is frayed in Death Proof (2007) and most of Planet Terror (2007), but they do make up by the end of Planet Terror (2007). Also the lack of "sickos" in Death Proof (2007) would suggest this is before Planet Terror (2007). Plusleaves at the end of Planet Terror (2007), but is back working in the hospital in Death Proof (2007). a5c7b9f00b
