Nick, a cop, gets murdered by his own partner. He joins the R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace Department), an alternate reality and a police force. They find Deados, souls that refuse to go to the afterlife, from wreaking havoc on life as we know it. Upon joining the R.I.P.D., Nick is paired with a lawman of the Old West, Roy. Upon returning back to Earth, Nick has the appearance of an old Chinese dude, while Roy has the appearance of a smoking hot blonde chick. It might be bad enough that Nick is unable to reunite with his wife, but what's worse is that these Deados will bring upon diabolical worldwide disaster. Nick and Roy must put a stop to these Deados before it's too little too late!
A recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him.
Ryan Reynolds plays a Nick, a Boston police detective who is betrayed and killed by his partner Bobby Hayes (played by Kevin Bacon) during a raid. Instead of ascending to Heaven, Nick is placed and assigned to R.I.P.D a.k.a Rest In Peace Department, a police department for dead people. He is partnered up with Roy Pulsifer (played by Jeff Bridges) to stop a diabolical plot to release evil spirits and wreck havoc on mankind. Sounds entertaining? Not Exactly. This action-comedy-sci/fantasy hybrid starts off with a promise, but quickly falls short on laughs and great action scenes. Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges have a few funny moments, but there sadly not enough to save this comedy.
First off, this film felt too similar to the Men In Black movies. It uses the same type of humor, except less funny. Reynolds and Bridges do manage to deliver a few hilarious one-liners here and there. The rest of the time, I found myself getting kinda bored. I only laughed maybe twice throughout the entire time. The action scenes weren't all that exciting, with the exception of the big climax towards the end, nor was the CGI. Seriously, if you're not dwell on humor, at least make the action scenes more exciting. Don't get me wrong, the whole concept of the film is pretty interesting, I really liked the plot. The problem is just it was poorly executed. I would only recommend this film to those who are strong fans of Ryan Reynolds or Jeff Bridges. Otherwise, this is probably worth skipping.
While it may not win any Oscars, it is a nice change of pace for summer entertainment, while it may have some similarities with Men In Black, that is where it stops, from the opening scenes with much more action that M.I.B. could ever offer. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, too bad it did not do better at the box office.
It is a shame since Ryan Reynolds has not been on a roll the last few years, having Kevin Bacon and Jeff Bridges doing his "Will Bill" character make up for great time, even it runs less that a hour and forty minutes, I will be waiting to get this on blu-ray when it releases! Catch it when it comes to a Redbox and you might just be a fan too!
For a movie that so strenuously rips off “Ghostbusters” and “Men in Black,” R.I.P.D. manages to come up with fresh new ways of being absolutely terrible.
