A Texas Ranger and a ruthless narcotics kingpin - they were childhood friends, now they are adversaries...
When they were kids Texas Ranger Jack Benteen used to be best friends with drug kingpin Cash Bailey. At present, however, the only element linking them together is Jack's girlfriend Sarita, who used to be with Cash. She returns to Cash as a voluntary hostage to make certain that Jack keeps his hands off the drug lord's operation. On top of that, there is a meticulously planned drug bust, in which both Jack and Cash butt heads with CIA-funded paramilitary Maj. Paul Hackett, following his own agenda.
Sure, it's not art. It's Walter Hill remaking The Wild Bunch with a Special Forces black ops team tangled up with a Texas Ranger who has feelings for his old buddy and CIA-agent- gone-drug-lord enemy.
It has gunfights, some in slow motion. It has William Forsyth and a spec ops team full of cool characters. It has the spec ops team introduced along with brief summaries of how hard-ass they are and how KIA they are supposed to be.
It is Lone Wolf McQuade with bells and whistles.
It is very entertaining. And in Nolte-Boothe-Ironside it has three of the top action icons of our time battling it out over nothing much in particular, but it's damn good whilst it floats through the eye balls and past the brain.
When it comes to steely eyed stares, Clint Eastwood has nothing on Nick Nolte. Except Nolte is a fine actor whose talents are largely wasted in this tiresomely Johnny-one-note performance. Powers Boothe, whose on-screen charisma is a match for Nolte's, expresses a broader range as the villain, but apparently never got the big break his talent deserves. Too bad. The movie itself goes downhill after a promising beginning. Director Walter Hill is simply unable to weave the subplots of a murky script by that avatar of violence for its own sake - John Milius - into anything like an engaging whole. The result is a fatal crash dive into gruesomely nonsensical parody of The Wild Bunch. The upshot provides a lesson for those who have the blood lust of a Peckinpah, without his cinematic stylishness or moral sensibility. In fact, the film probably works better as parody, particularly Nolte's cartoonish Texas Ranger. A waste of fine talent on third-rate bravado. Save your time.
