A 707 aircraft jetliner on its way from Athens to Rome and then to New York City is hijacked by two Lebanese terrorists. The terrorists demand that the pilot take them to Beirut. What the terrorists don't realize is that an elite team of commandos led by Major McCoy (Norris) and by Colonel Alexander (Marvin) as been called into service to eliminate all terrorists on the jetliner and who's involved in the hijacking and try to retake the plane before the terrorists kill all the hostages. When the two terrorists Abdul Rafai and Mustafa hijack a Boeing 707 in Athens with 144 passengers and 8 crews, they use a grenade to force pilot Captain Roger Campbell to fly to Beirut, Lebanon, instead of to Rome and New York. Meanwhile the Delta Force commanded by Colonel Nick Alexander and Major Scott McCoy are assigned to resolve the situation. Abdul and Mustafa separate the Jewish and Marine passengers and they are transported to Beirut, while twelve other terrorists embark on board. Then they fly to Algiers, where the women and children are released. McCoy and the Delta Force team are prepared to attack the plane when Alexander learns that there are now fourteen terrorists on board and not only two, and he aborts the mission. Abdul kills a Marine and returns to Beirut with the male passengers on board. Now the Delta Force needs to act in two locations crowded of terrorists to release the hostages. Will they succeed? Large-scale, action packed movie barely takes any breathers, and it's all the better for this fact. Inspired by a real life incident, it tells the story of an airliner commandeered by evil terrorist scum and the intrepid American squadron that takes them down. At first glance, considering the priceless all star cast in this thing, it does seem ludicrous that this thing *could* be taken seriously, but co-writer / director Menahem Golan, one of the head honchos of the Cannon Group, pulls it off. The movie is by equal turns topical, tense, and thrilling. Moreover, it has two of the great cinema icons when it comes to toughness: Lee Marvin (in what was sadly his last feature film) and Chuck Norris. (Marvin does look a little long in the tooth for this sort of thing, but projects an effortless sense of authority and still has great screen presence.) As one can see, it is divided into two parts, with the first confined to the airplane, and the second when the assorted hostages are taken to separate locations and the Delta Force go into action. A stirring, patriotic (if also a tad repetitive) main musical theme by Alan Silvestri helps propel the film along, while the amusing ensemble cast creates some poignant moments, especially Martin Balsam and Joey Bishop as two of the passengers. Also to be found in this thing are the likes of Lainie Kazan, Shelley Winters, Susan Strasberg, Bo Svenson, Robert Vaughn, Hanna Schygulla, George Kennedy, Kim Delaney, and the always welcome and always charismatic Steve James. It's particularly amusing to see Robert Forster cast as the main villain, and he's as solid as ever, although he proves to be absolutely no match for Norris when the two finally have their inevitable showdown. Golan has this thing hit the ground running and literally begin with a bang, offering little in the way of a letup until the final scene. Highly recommended for any action fan eager to see a superior fighting force take on truly loathsome antagonists. Even at two hours and nine minutes, this refrains from ever being boring. Eight out of 10. I watched this movie again today and noticed a few strange events in the movie. When it showed the Pentagon at 2:15 am, It's shown in broad daylight. Other places in the US are dark at that time. Another funny moment is when the main hijacker is demanding to get into the cockpit, when the cockpit door opens, it hits the hijacker in the face, making him drop the pin to the grenade. Rule of thumb there. "When trying to have a door opened, stay out of the way the door when it swings out." This movie might teach passengers that are traveling with this terrorism scare out there on what to do and not to do in a hostage situation. yes, its based on the TWA Flight 847 was an international Trans World Airlines flight which was hijacked by Lebanese Shia Extremists, later identified as members of Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad, on Friday morning, June 14, 1985, after originally taking off from Cairo, Egypt. The flight was en route from Athens, Greece to Rome, Italy, from where it was scheduled to travel on to London. The aircraft with its passengers and crew endured a three-day intercontinental ordeal during which passengers were threatened and some beaten. Passengers with Jewish-sounding names were moved apart from the others, and another passenger, U.S. Navy diver Robert Dean Stethem, was tortured and murdered, his body unceremoniously thrown onto the tarmac. Dozens of passengers were held hostage over the next two weeks, until released by their captors after some of their demands were met.

The initial demands of the hijackers included:

the release of the "Kuwait 17," those involved in the bombing of the U.S. embassy in Kuwait. the release of all 766 mainly Lebanese Shias transferred to Israel in conjunction with Israel's immediate withdrawal from Lebanon;(a pullout had been underway since January and was already virtually complete) international condemnation of Israel and the United States. and condemnation of the March 8, 1985, car bombing in the Beirut suburb of Bir al Abed earlier that year. The Greek government released the accomplice Ali Atwa and in exchange the hijackers released eight Greek citizens, including Greek pop singer Demis Roussos.

The iconic image of this hijacking was a photograph showing a gun being held to the pilot's head (sticking out of the cockpit window) as the pilot is being questioned by reporters, but it was actually an unloaded gun held by a teenaged security guard who wanted to be on television.

Flight attendant Uli Derickson was widely credited with calming the hijackers and saving the lives of many passengers. Because her German was the only common language with the hijackers, who spoke poor English, she acted as translator and liaison for most of the ordeal.Notably, she defused a tense situation in Algiers when airport officials refused to refuel the plane without payment by offering her own Shell Oil credit card, which was used to charge about $5,500 for 6,000 gallons of jet fuel, for which she later was reimbursed. She also hid the passports of Jewish passengers so they could not be singled out. a5c7b9f00b
