-------------------------------------

During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. The year is 1805. Europe has fallen to Napoleon, and only the Royal Navy stands in his way to total victory. Off the cost of South America, a new conflict is brewing. Captain Jack "Lucky Jack" Aubrey of the Man-of-War HMS Surprise is under orders to sink or capture the French privateer Acheron, which has been deployed to the region. After seven weeks of uneventful sailing, the Acheron strikes first, all but crippling the Surprise in an engagement in which Aubrey realizes his enemy's ship is nautically superior to his own. Along with his close friend and confidant Stephan Maturin who also happens to be the ship's surgeon, Aubrey is now faced with the choice of retreating to England and admitting defeat or remaining at the Acheron's mercy. Aubrey must now do the impossible if he is to survive, repair his ship, catch up to his enemy and defeat the Acheron--somehow. I didn't see the point of this film at all. Most of it is set on ships with precious few other locations. If you see it, you will feel the claustrophobia and sense of being trapped that came with being on one of these boats, I assume. Plus, I thought they played up the "naturalist" guy being nerdy, wimpy and fruity just a little too much. Russell Crowe looks gay with long blonde hair. Scheduled for release on June 6, studio heads at Fox, Miramax and Universal decided to wait on releasing `Master and Commander' in the fall rather than the summer to give it Oscar consideration. I would not call it the best film of 2003. However, it is an instant classic! Why? Peter Weir's direction, of course. The man knows how to take a story and play it out on the screen with excellent characterization, visual effects, acting, music and set design. When it all comes together, `Master and Commander' is made with such perfection and dignity, that it far exceeds anything in its genre. `Master and Commander' tells the story of British Naval Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) and his voyage during the Napoleonic Wars. Along with a crew of 197 men, including Aubrey's best friend and the ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), the crew set out to discover different species and lands in the Pacific Ocean. But that all changes when a French vessel fires upon their ship. Crippled at sea but under repair, Aubrey's ship sets out on a journey to find and destroy the French ship. Along the way, the men will battle a search for inner courage and will be forced to face odds they never dreamed possible. This film is made on such a grand scale, but when analyzed, there is nothing that has not been done before-except for the immense detail that no other film like it has done before. In the opening scene when Aubrey's ship is fired upon, they are floating in dense fog and can not see the enemy. When the ship emerges from the fog and they fire a second time, huge plumes of smoke can be seen emanating from the French ship's cannons. When the cannons strike the British ship, the damage is immense. We see the wood splinter, we see men get injured, we see the sails break down. The camera captures these shots in amazing clarity and furthermore, in real time.

Weir's direction is outstanding! The director of such wonderful films as `Fearless' and `The Truman Show' has gathered a cast that fits the film like a glove. Crowe is superb as the courageous and fearless Captain Aubrey. What better choice than Crowe when you consider his countenance as he appears dignified yet cordial to his men. Bettany's performance proves what an admirable actor he is. He also starred with Crowe in `A Beautiful Mind' as John Nash's imaginary friend Charles Herman. Here, his character Maturin is both a trusted friend of Aubrey's and the voice of reason when the goings get tough on the open sea. `Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World' is based on the novel by Patrick O'Brian. Weir, along with John Collee, have created a screenplay that details so much about the ship and the characters on board. We get to know a few of the men on board, from a gallant boy named Blakeney (Max Pirkis) to a cowardly Midshipman named Hollom (Lee Ingleby). Their character development is light enough where Weir does not waste film time on them, but satisfies the audience's interest in the characters. Also, look out for Billy Boyd as one of the ship's Coxswain named Barrett Bonden. It is hard to imagine him playing anything other than the hobbit Pippin in `Lord of the Rings.' In the end, one can not help but appreciate this film. It is excellent in every way. Moreover, it is not encumbered with unnecessary action sequences or absurdities. **** Rare proof that a gigantic production in contemporary Hollywood can possess a distinctive personality and its own approach to storytelling, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World proves as bracing as a stiff wind on the open sea. alongside their parents far earlier than that, depending on profession and regional poverty (like the Yorkshire mines). a5c7b9f00b
