The adventures of a Ragnar Lothbrok: the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the saga of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods: legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors.
The story of Ragnar Lothbrok who, in the 9th century, rises from simple farmer to King of the Vikings. Along the way he deals with internal crises, family issues and foreign foes, and discovers a few new lands.
Absolutely love this show! Been looking for a long time for a show with vikings that I could get into, Well Odin has answered! I have grown so attached to these people and love every bit of it. Watching everyone grow up and seeing how they change over time is amazing. The different things that everyone goes through to get to where they are today is something to pay attention to. The history in the show is so much better than what I have seen in different T.V. shows that I have tried to watch. The vikings are a brutal clan but also behind all the blood and gore there is love and family. The waves are always crashing at their door step but Odin looks down from above and sees them to safety.
I was hoping for the best from this show, but I was sorely disappointed. The writing is average, at best, and it doesn't try to hold onto historical Viking tales that could have brought real life to this show. The script is too Hollywood with the usual dumb mini-series types of interactions that plague television on a day-to-day basis.
Even with all the script defects, Travis Fimmel is just absolutely terrible as the lead character. He doesn't look like a Viking and he looks more like someone trying out for those fake wrestling programs. I will give this show a few more views to see if it can develop more with the script and hopefully mature. Maybe Fimmel will get better rather than the wooden performance he has given thus far.
This is common in English-speaking produced movies and TV shows. Generally the characters speak English when they are talking among themselves. But it's implied they are still speaking their native tongue. The Vikings are generally speaking Icelandic since it is the language closest to Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. They also use some words from Swedish and Danish, though we *hear* it as English. When speaking with foreign characters, such as characters from England, they speak in Icelandic and we see subtitles. This is to show the English characters can't understand them.
Where it gets confusing to some viewers is that the English characters are often speaking Old English when among the Vikings, which can sound very similar to Swedish to an untrained ear.
