As she searches for allies and answers in the wake of the uprising, Tris and Four are on the run. Being hunted by Jeanine Matthews, the leader of the Erudite faction, Tris and Four will race against time as they try to figure out what Abnegation sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris faces one impossible challenge after another as she unlocks the truth about the past and ultimately the future of her world. One choice can transform you-or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love. Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships. Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so. Robert Schwentke, taking over after Neil Burger on this series, is coming off from 'R.I.P.D.' Yep. However, he did have RED and Flightplan before that, both of which were fairly decent, mainstream efforts.

After 'The Illusionist' and 'Limitless', I did feel that 'Divergent' was a come-down on Neil Burger's part, almost like Schwentke's own 'R.I.P.D.' was.

Before I get into the movie itself, let me get a few background, surrounding stuff outta the way.

The world of 'The Hunger Games' is much better realized than the one in 'The Divergent series'. Both in the written works, as well as the movies. Both series, however, are guilty of selling out by unnecessarily breaking apart the final book. However, both the series are infinitely superior to the sparkly vampire series, though the latter's the one that's partially responsible for LionsGate bankrolling both these series (to be fair, the success of the 'Harry Potter' movies and the 'Lord of the Rings' movies green-lit 'Twilight', and then.....).

In terms of talent, both series are fairly balanced, though Woodley doesn't have it easy here (the quality of the screenplay seems a tad lesser for this one, though, to be fair, the quality of the writing in the books didn't make it easier on the screenplay-writers either).

One thing that's definitely refreshing about this one - the kills are not long drawn out, and are just there in the service of the plot. No one thought to make those encounters more film-worthy, and perhaps that's a good thing (well, not everyone agrees...).

This one has a macguffin, that I didn't remember from reading the books (but it came back to me as the flick progressed), and that makes it a typical Hollywood mainstream drama, more mainstream than the 1st one, which seemed like a drawn-out sorting hat episode from Harry Potter (not my words, though I did see the similarity even while reading the books).

The CGI is obvious, though the quality seems improved compared to the first one, and I did enjoy the 'I am Legend' style views of dystopian Chicago. However, I am not a big fan of excessive use of CGI in any movie, and this one seemed, well, excessive.

Kate Winslet's paycheck performance in this is now joined by Naomi Watts, a la Julianne Moore joining 'The Hunger Games'. This also gives us a chance to see the similar arcs in both series towards the 2nd and the 3rd books, though Moore's is better-realized. I was disappointed to note that Winslet's lines were so clichéd, though she admirably line-reads each and every clichéd line she is supposed to spout. One of the flattest characters ever render on-screen, and the interpretation of what an Erudite leader should be never might have been intended to be visualized in this fashion.

Theo James doesn't have much to do, and his thunder is stolen by the relatively more powerful characterizations of the other male characters: Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort and even Jai Courtney, in spite of their relatively lower screen time.

Mekhi Phifer plays a routine heavy, and it is disappointing to watch him wasted in a role like this, especially after the promise he showed in his initial movies. Daniel Dae Kim has a reasonably substantial role, something more substantial than either Watts or Stevenson even have, though that might change in the subsequent movies. But it sure is nice to see him on the big screen after the promise he showed in 'Lost'.

Not sure if the bad 3D was due to bad post-conversion, or due to bad projection and smudged glasses, or due to a combination of all of those, but I do recommend a non-3D viewing for this one. And I do recommend a theatrical viewing.

With the ending following the way it ended in the books, this seems kinda self-sufficient if no one watched the other movies in this series, but I have read the final one, and know what's coming. I do wish it were just the one movie, though, and I have been enthused to read that they are embracing the difficult denouement of the book. This one and the 'Maze runner' series end similarly, and it is not a typical YA thing in either, and having the movies also embrace the same is kinda bold, and perhaps even timely. Insurgent continues right after the ending of the first movie, with Tris and her companions looking for refuge from the attacks of the Erudites commanded by Jeanine.

If you didn't watch the first movie, and I don't know why you would want to watch this one, you will probably feel a bit lost, especially since the plot gets even more complicated than the one from the first movie. They do give little hints from flashbacks and information slips during the dialog to try and help without diminishing the pace of the movie. And what a frenetic pace.

The characters are always running for their lives, or hiding, or being charged with crimes, or dreaming. Early on in the movie there is an action scene, and right when you think it's over and you will be able to relax, BAM, new problem only solved through punching. The only stops are for the much needed dialogs, a weak B story, and for Tris to deal with the weight of being a divergent and its consequences to the world. By the way, Shailene Woodley does a great job as Tris and owns it (the rest of the cast is just fine).

You should not be bored in this movie. The pace, coupled with big special effects may make you feel excited at times. The action camera is pretty decent to, showing the action, but it does fall for the "fast cuts" trap at times, and you can't see exactly who is punching whom. The major problem here is the story, which at times feels a little convoluted. It was interesting seeing a little bit more of the "less important" factions that we didn't get to see in the first movie. For instance how they deal with problems: Amity hopes they go away on their own and Candid with their justice morals.

But we lost character development or a great finale. The writers had to do some tweaking to get the book into a movie. Some information and conflicts that were in the book are not there, so some developments feel a bit rushed or not as significant as they did not have time to grow. Parts of the story felt like they were put aside or dragged on just to show a feel more cool special effects, which, I can't believe I am actually saying this, felt unnecessary. Like they are showing off so you feel good about spending money to watch this in a movie theater. And because of that, they don't feel as exciting, or relevant.

Take for instance 'Inception', which had special effects for similar story reasons. There, they had a purpose. The room was turning because outside the dreamer's body was turning. And it affected the outcome of the action: How to drop someone when there is no gravity? Here the effects are distracting and kind of repetitive, they just... were there.

And if not for the last 30 seconds, it would seem the franchise could have ended here. The way it was done, there would be no need for two more sequels.

In the end, if you've seen the first one and enjoyed it, you should watch this one. At least to know how it goes. It's bigger, not necessarily better, yet you should have some fun. But if you are not that excited, wait for the DVD. Or the Bluray, and you can see all the effects better. Once you swallow the giant pill that is the premise, it just about makes sense, and Woodley sells it with all her conviction. a5c7b9f00b
