A mysterious black, sleek automobile terrorizes everyone it comes into contact with in a small town in Utah. The local sheriff may be the only person who can stop this menace which has been possessed by pure evil.
Near the small desert town of Santa Ynez, a mysterious black car runs down two teenage bicyclers en route to camp, then it hit-and-runs a hitchhiker with local Amos Clements as witness. Sheriff Everett puts his men on alert and plants road blocks in the area to arrest the murderer, but soon he himself falls victim to the car. Sheriff Wade Parent leads the hunt for the vehicle that threatens their town and seems impossible to locate. When his beloved girlfriend, teacher Lauren Humphries, challenges the driver in a cemetery, the car hunts her in her home. Wade realizes he might be dealing with supernatural powers.
While traveling through the desert nearby the small town of Santa Ynez, Utah on their bicycles to camp, two teenage bicyclers are murdered by a mysterious black car.
The films opens with an Anton LaVey quotation and he is credited as creative consultant. Not sure what he could have possibly contributed to this film... I suspect he was just added as a (small) publicity gimmick and not really involved.
The founder of the Razzies considers this to be one of the most enjoyable bad movies. I can see it -- the way the kids fly off the bridge, the quote about "farting music for a year". Plenty of cheesy moments here. The New York Times said the "performances are terrible" and that the creators "clearly didn't have enough interest in the project to provide it with any kind of mythological substructure."
While the first film that comes to mind in comparison to this movie is "Christine", that movie came out later, and this film was actually inspired by "Duel" and "Death Race 2000" (and both make sense as logical antecedents).
Melody Thomas Scott, recalled the director being gruff and not expressing director to actors very clearly. "He made me uncomfortable." She pushed herself to a dangerous level just to shock and scare him. Geraldine Keams was fresh off "The Outlaw Josie Wales". She not only acted, but helped translate dialogue into Navajo, because the other actors (even when Indian) were not Navajo themselves. Much of this got cut, unfortunately, but you have to respect the commitment to authenticity.
Elliot Silverstein confirms that the company wanted "Jaws on land". He saw the problem as being that "the devil is in the darkness" while "God is in the desert", the sun. How can you make a film about the devil in a car if you are out in the blazing sun? He found a way, though you can understand his frustration.
The three of them are featured in interviews on Scream Factory's blu-ray disc, which is worth picking up for fans. The director interview is unfortunately very short and not terribly insightful, but the film itself -- in glorious high definition -- is worth owning.
It's pretty bad when the best acting was from "The Car". The actual car. I was rooting for "The Car" to run everyone over, especially the annoying teacher (nothing against teachers, just this one!). I actually cheered when the car ran the teacher over & wished it had happened sooner! Christine is much better! This is kind of like one of those movies that's so bad it's good, like "Frogs" but "Frogs" actually pulled it off, this movie I pretty much laughed through the whole thing & hoped The Car would kill them all off. The acting was pretty bad, I couldn't stand any of the characters but the movie was good for a laugh but that's pretty much it. Don't waste any money buying it that's for sure.
The demonic car in this film was designed by George Barris, who specialized in custom cars and who worked on a number of film and television projects, including the car driven by TV's "The Munsters", Herbie "The Love Bug", and the vehicle driven by the heroes in "Ghostbusters".
