Wealthy businessman Ross Webster (Richard Pryor), a mischievous computer genius. Ross decides to abuse his talents, in a way to help Webster with his plans for economic control. When the man of steel interferes, something must be done about Supes. When Gus' synthetic Kryptonite fails to kill Superman, it turns him in an evil incarnation of his former self. The tar-laced Kryptonite pits man against himself, setting up the Clark vs. Superman battle. In mortal enemies, the Man of Steel has no match. Even faced with a trio of sinister super-powered villains from his home planet, Superman saved the day. But can super-strength stand up to the diabolical circuitry of a criminally insane computer? Enter Gus Gorman (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High School reunion and Superman turns into his own worst enemy after exposure to a chunk of red kryptonite. Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor) is thrown off unemployment after 36 weeks. He discovers that he's naturally gifted as a computer genius. Wealthy businessman Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn) finds Gorman's scheme stealing his money and uses Gorman's skills for his own corrupt gains. Meanwhile Clark (Christopher Reeve) goes back to Smallville and reconnects with Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole). Webster sends Gorman to Smallville to take over a satellite. Eventually he creates a synthetic Kryptonite that turns Superman dark.

This is the much maligned follow up to the original two. I seem to like it more than most people. Whereas the comedy in this franchise is often campy, at least Richard Pryor provides a real comedian to direct the jokes. What this one lacks that was in Superman II is the great villain Zod. It becomes a series of rescues like firemen rescuing treed cats. The introduction of Lana Lang could have led to some good romantic entanglements. However the general public, still pulling for Lois Lane, was probably put off by his change of heart. They probably still pine for the missing Lois Lane and Lex Luthor days. And I actually like the supercomputer set. For all of its problems, Richard Pryer's likability makes up for much of its deficiencies. This film is not terrible, it is a decent movie. However, it is not nearly up to par with Superman or Superman II. The star of this movie is not Superman, they tried to make a comedy using then box office star Richard Pryor.

The movie takes place in Metropolis again. The evil guy in this movie, unfortunately is not Lex Luthor, but an evil, greedy tycoon who is hell bent on taking over the world. With the help of Richard Pryor, they make a super computer that could kill Superman.

Not a bad movie, however, this is definately the movie that caused the series to "jump the shark". (If you don't know what this means, go to www.jumptheshark.com, although this term is usually for television shows.) The comedy in the film is not very funny, however there are some memorable moments. We finally get to see Clark's childhood sweetheart Lana Lang, as he returns home for a class reunion. There is also the battle between Clark and the evil Superman that is pretty wild.

Again, this is the movie that caused the series just to go downhill. After an amazing sequel like Superman II, I can not believe that they took the series into a totally different direction.

Hopefully, a new film maker will resurrect the character of Superman, and we will see a new, better series.

However, nobody can replace Christopher Reeve. He just seems to be born to play the role. Superman III is the kind of movie I feared the original "Superman" would be. It's a cinematic comic book, shallow, silly, filled with stunts and action, without much human interest. Whether or not Clark & Jimmy's trip to Smallville would be a business expense is not explained in the film, that is, in light of the fact that Clark mentions he's doing a story on his high school reunion.

However, if they'd flown then Clark wouldn't have been on hand to stop the chemical fire they encounter. On a plane, it would've been much more difficult for Clark to suddenly leave (he'd probably detect the fire somehow, say super-smell or his super-vision) the plane w/out anyone noticing.

Then again, Jimmy & Clark might have flown to a major city near Smallville first & then boarded a bus from the airport to Smallville itself.

In Superman IV, the new owner, David Warfield asks Clark why there were no travel expenses for him and he responds that he gets airsick which I assume he has said before since you never actually see "Clark" fly. Not really. When Gus gets the composition readings from the satellite's scan of a kryptonite meteorite, there's an element that doesn't correspond to anything in Earth's periodic table of elements & therefore couldn't be reproduced in the lab. So Gus, probably thinking he'd be scolded by Webster, entered "tar" as the unknown compound. When the completed compound was given to Gus after being manufactured in the lab, it turned out to be "fake" kryptonite which didn't have the total effect on Superman they'd intended. Instead of killing him it altered his personality, which did have it's benefits, allowing Webster to begin his plan to control the United States' oil supply.

As well, although this is not true Kryptonite, its effects are similar to that of Red Kryptonite. Red Kryptonite has numerous different effects on Superman. At times, in the comics and in the CW show Smallville, Red Kryptonite has altered Superman's personality in numerous ways. It is either a continuity issue, or a different power, which it could be as we never see the actual beam going from his eyes.

Also, Zod only had his powers for a brief time, he may have only had control to send concentrated beams of heat that were easily deflected. Superman had much more experience and control over his powers, at the bar he was angry and almost showing off by melting the mirror. In the bar, it looked more like big round heat waves hitting the mirror instead of the typical red laser beams. a5c7b9f00b
