An astronaut gets infected with alien DNA during the first mission on Mars and runs amok on earth. The surviving team members from the first film team up with a peaceful, genetically re-engineered Sil to track the monster down. Mykelti Williamson and Justin Lazard are a pair of astronauts who make the first successful manned mission to Mars. Lazard's character gets infected by an alien and slowly begins to mutate. When they get back to Earth all he has on his mind is to have sex with Henstridge! OK, so it is not great art, but it sure was an interesting movie.

I am not burdened with the fact of seeing this as a sequel, as I have not seen the original, so I can rate it on its own.

There is little story line here. Aliens invade US through astronaut. Austronat breeds profusely to spead the species. Anti-hero hunts the astronaut with the aid of immune fellow astronaut.

I like Michael Madsen and I thought he did a fair job. He was assisted by Mykelti Williamson, who has the sickle-cell trait, which is key to the movie. CSI's Marg Helgenberger does a James Woods (John Carpenter's Vampires) that could lead to a sequel. Natasha Henstridge, what can I say, just incredible.

No Oscars for this movie, but definitely some golden globes: Nancy La Scala, Raquel Gardner, and Felicia Deel. OK, I know I wrote one comment already, but I really feel the need to expand on it.

This is quite simply the worst movie I've ever seen.

The script was so full of holes it didn't just break my suspension of disbelief, it tortured it. The most glaring example is how Patrick and the other (female) infected astronaut failed to mate despite being stuck together in close proximity in a spacecraft for the year or two it takes to get from Mars to Earth. Then there was that ludicrous scene where Eve escaped. Yeah, Sill got out because the cage they kept her in wasn't strong enough... so of course they're not going to make Eve's cage out of anything stronger! And they've been experimenting on her for years but never bothered to test whether or not their rifles would be effective on her, or whether they should use heavier weapons! Then there's how they send a small number of lightly armed mostly untrained people after her and Patrick, as opposed to a heavily armed SEAL team. And remember how Patrick's blood mutated into some tentacle monster that killed a guy when they tried to test it... guess what was never mentioned again!

Don't even get me started on the realism aspect. I mean, a two minute pregnancy in a normal human woman... I'm sorry, even by sci fi standards that's an insult to all medical science. Whoever thought it up clearly has no clue about how pregnancy & the female body works. I don't care if they're fatal: a fetus that grows like that would never survive long enough to reach viability outside the womb, all you'd get is an instantaneous miscarriage. Mind you, it wouldn't be an issue if this was a decent movie in other respects, but it isn't.

The acting and dialog were truly terrible. I'm sorry, I just can't get emotionally involved in what's happening to these people at all. They have all the believability and pathos of a glass of water. The ONLY character I ever got any emotional investment in was that nameless woman Patrick grabbed out of a supermarket and tried to rape, and that's just because it's a situation that naturally pushes any decent person's buttons and actually felt fairly believable (it happens in real life after all, minus the "spawn evil alien baby" part).

The thing that made the original Species surprisingly good was that Sill was a person who was interesting and who you could sympathize with to a degree. Patrick is neither. I think they should have just let Sill's son survive (hey, if those things can survive a headshot they should be able to survive third degree burns), I think he'd have made a much better alien. Then again, the people who made this film would have screwed that up just as badly.

The general tone of the film was "let's throw lots of blood and tits at the screen so nobody can see the plot holes!" I have no problem with blood and death in a movie so long as it's in good taste, I LIKE horror movies, but this isn't. This is blood and death used as a substitute for decent story, characters, and acting. It's very obvious the scriptwriter and director put no effort into this thing whatsoever. From the glaringly obvious plot holes to the gratuitous rip-offs of better movies like Alien and the Thing (notice that Patrick's alien form looks remarkably like the queen from Aliens!).

On that subject, I find the depiction of sex in this film probably its most distasteful aspect. The film has a lot of sex in it but that sex is anything but sexy. It has an adolescent surface titillation aspect to it, but under that it's all about gore and death, something icky to be scared of. It's juvenalia.

Now I realize a movie about some freaky alien creature that wants to have sex so it can spawn some sort of freaky alien baby is inevitably going to involve a rather creepy form of eroticism, but the original Species wasn't anywhere near this juvenile. This is sex the way an emotionally troubled 14 year old virgin thinks of it. I'd be inclined to agree with other viewers that it's misogynistic and exploitive except the way it presents male sexuality is even worse. Brain-melting, head-spinning rank toxicity that shows no evidence of intelligence as we know it. Two years after the death of the extraterrestrial Sil (in Species), Dr Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) has successfully cloned another Sil from a frozen embryo. Named Eve (Natasha Henstridge), she has been raised surrounded only by human females and willingly submits to tests to determine her vulnerabilities in order to defend mankind from future invasions. Meanwhile, during the first manned space landing on Mars, astronaut Patrick Ross (Justin Lazard) becomes infected with alien DNA from a soil sample he collected for analysis. When he returns to Earth, he begins to mutate and to breed, rousing the previously docile Eve via a telepathic link. Consequently, Dr Baker and diplomatic security specialist Preston Lenox (Michael Madsen) must once again hunt down and destroy the new threat. Species II is a sequel to Species (1995) (1995). The screenplay for Species II was written by American screenwriter Chris Brancato based on characters created by Dennis Feldman for the first movie. A novelization, also titled Species II (1998) and written by American author Yvonne Navarro, was released concurrently with the movie. Species II was followed by Species III (2004) (2004) and Species: The Awakening (2007) (2007). While doing research on the fossils in a Mars meteorite, Dr Herman Cromwell (Peter Boyle) discovered evidence of carbon-based elements that only exist in the Magellanic Galaxy, 100 million light-years away, and theorizes that Mars was visited by an alien species about a billion years ago and that it was this species that turned Mars into the useless hunk of rock that exists today. He warned against the Mars space mission on the grounds that the astronauts might be contaminated with the alien DNA, but the government was gung ho on using Mars as an outpost. Because of his opposition, Cromwell was fired from his position at Stanford University, declared insane, and placed in the Garberville Psychiatric Institute. Dennis Gamble's genes carried the sickle cell anemia trait, but he does not have sickle cell anemia. This disorder causes the body to make sickle (or crescent) shaped red blood cells instead of the round, doughnut (without the hole) shaped cells of normal blood. Apparently, the alien DNA could not bond with Gamble's DNA under those circumstances, as they cannot handle our genetic diseases. This part is a bit confusing as there was no explanation given. In the commentary, the director says that it was an "arm" belonging to Patrick. He was beginning to suspect there was something wrong with him (he'd already asked his father, Senator Judson Ross (James Cromwell), for help and was told to suck it up), so he went to retrieve his alien-infected blood in order to cover up any evidence of his infection. He "called" to his blood, causing the vial to fall to the floor and stream toward and up the wall behind which he was hiding. When the doctor got close to the wall, Patrick jammed his arm through and killed him, knowing that Orinsky had already learned of his infection. No. Dr. Baker compares Eve's DNA to the substance found in Orinsky's wounds and concludes that they are structurally similar but not a perfect match. This is like comparing two human blood samples. It would be easy to identify them as structurally human, but variations in the DNA would reveal that they are not from the same individual. This tells Baker that there is another human/alien hybrid out there. Not exactly. No Mars based meteorite was found in 1996. However, after the Allan Hills 84001 meteorite, found in 1984 in Allan Hills, Antarctica and thought to be from Mars, was subjected to thorough research, it was announced in 1996 by NASA astrobiologist David McKay that it contained microfossils, evidence of ancient Martian bacteria. Although Eve was electronically tethered to a control box that would set off a bomb in her brain should she ever escape, she is shown demolishing the tether manually by smashing it during its countdown just before it reaches activation. Baker and Press follow Eve to the shed where Patrick's hybrid offspring have entered the cocoon stage. While they spray the cocoons with a toxin made from Gamble's blood, Eve and Patrick begin to mate. Press goes after Patrick, who has morphed into his alien form, while Baker pleads for Eve (also in her alien form) to help them. Eve tries, but Patrick kills her. Patrick then turns on Press, while Baker keeps spraying him with the toxin. With Gamble's consent, Press stabs his leg with a pitchfork, then thrusts the pitchfork into the Patrick creature, innoculating him with Gamble's blood and killing him. In the final scene, the military arrives to escort Press, Laura, and Dennis away. Eve's body is placed in an ambulance. From out of nowhere, a cat jumps on her body. In the corner, one of Patrick's offspring is shown hiding. In the final scene, Eve's abdomen begins to swell. a5c7b9f00b
