On the remote Norwegian Bear Island, used as a submarine base by the Germans during WW2, U.N. scientist Larsen sends a distress signal using an emergency NATO frequency and is received by scientific vessel Morning Rose.
A group of people converge on a barren Arctic island. They have their reasons for being there but when a series of mysterious accidents and murders take place, a whole lot of darker motives become apparent. Could the fortune in buried Nazi gold be the key to the mystery? Donald Sutherland and Vanessa Redgrave investigate.
Too bad it's not on DVD. There are many cut versions, 102 minutes instead of 118 minutes. I don't know why. It has an excellent cast, outstanding plot, scenery is superb, and what do you get for all that? A whole truckload of so-called movie reviewers and experts saying it is awful, a waste of time, not up to the standards of the book, and on-and-on. I say it is excellent, and the reviewers are all wrong, and that makes me wonder how good their judgments are on other movies.
It makes sense, that if you find a great number of them are full of beans on a movie you know, like this one, and "Popeye" with Robin Williams, then they are probably political, corrupt, and outright prima donna jerks. I think now, I'm going to reorder my priorities on giving credence to movie critics.
You read Alistair MacLean's excellent novel, then you sit and watch this film. After you've gotten over the sheer awfulness of it, a question springs to mind. Did anyone involved with this film read the book? The script writers seem to have glanced at the back cover of the paperback edition before churning out this dreck. They didn't read the back cover, just glanced.
The British PG Version, released on VHS by RCA/Columbia misses out several plot scenes of nearly 11 and a half minutes. a5c7b9f00b
