Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory. Casey Newton is a genius who dreams of one day going up into space. She's sure she'll get her chance because her father works at the NASA launch center at Cape Canaveral. But when the place is being closed down, Casey sneaks in and tries to stop them from doing that by sabotaging the equipment. She is caught and thrown in jail, when she's released and her personal effects are given to her, among them is a pin which she says is not hers. When she touches it, she finds in a futuristic city. When the pin runs out of energy, she wants to go back so she finds online someone who might know something about it. She goes there and when she talks to the people there, they ask her who gave it to her. When she says she doesn't know, they don't believe her and refuse to let her leave. Eventually they reveal themselves to be armed with advanced weapons. They try to shoot her but someone saves her and she discovers the ones who attacked her are robots. The one who saved her introduces herself as Athena. She says that Casey needs to help save the future. She takes Casey to meet a man named Frank Walker. When she sees him, he refuses to help. But when they are attacked by more robots, they try to go to the place she saw. There's no denying that our denial is what will steer our race into oblivion. Regardless of political undertones, the movie blatantly professes a positive message: worthy of the embrace it shall never receive, as our neolithic society has yet to evolve from its guilty pleasures of persecuting they who preach love and shaming they who inspire tolerance.

Stuffed here and there with nifty acting and an abundance of budget, in terms of pure entertainment and visual spectacle I am unquestionably sold. The plot is relatively predictable, at most moments, but in no way poorly conceived. Exposition goes down the seemingly endless railway to Forever as is the case with several Disney films I have encountered in my short lifetime, but I can never say that these trips ever fail to construct their curiously marketable characters. Dash it, I am pretentiously nitpicking, and only in a blazing Inferno would that be customary of me.

Watch this film. Mull on an armchair. Dodge that contrition sinking in. Let time patch your damages. Carry on living as you ever did. Fling some food in anger. Shower for an hour.

Postscript: Take my word for it at your own risk. I have viewed this film a while back and can remember no more than a gist of it. The Disney company must have thought that "Tomorrowland" was going to be a big hit. After all, their previous filming of an attraction at Disneyland ("Pirates of the Caribbean") had paid off handsomely. And this new attempt was directed and co-written by the talented Brad Bird.

But as you probably know, the movie performed below expectations. In some ways, that is a shame. For one thing, this is one Hollywood blockbuster that is more ambitious than most others. There are some really good ideas here, from the basic premise to details of various sizes here and there. The cast is likable and gives good performances. The special effects are first rate, and there are some exciting moments.

However, in the end, the movie doesn't quite make it. Most of the blame has to do with the script. While the script is filled with great ideas and originality, at the same time these things are displayed in a frustrating manner. The movie keeps the audience in the dark for the longest time as to what happened in the past and what is happening now and why. There's nothing wrong in keeping some mystery for a while ("The Terminator" did this well), but after a while I just wanted to shout to the screen, "Enough, just fill me in!" And even when some explanation does start to come, it is in a confusing manner. I'm not exactly sure, for example, why George Clooney's character was originally exiled from Tomorrowland, or why Tomorrowland fell into a state of disrepair. Another problem with the movie is that there isn't a strong enough evil to be fought. The main bad guy doesn't show up until the last quarter of the movie, and when he does, he doesn't come across as THAT bad.

So in the end, the movie doesn't quite work. But you've got to give Disney credit for at least trying hard to make something more original than usual. And at least they didn't try to make a movie about Splash Mountain. Tomorrowland may be well-made, but whether you're talking about it thematically or dramatically, this is a profoundly mixed bag. There is a very short scene shown after the credits. See here or here for more info. There was originally an alternate scene planned featuring Samuel L Jackson. For more info see here. a5c7b9f00b
