When Earth passes through the tail of Rea-M rogue comet, the machines come to life and start to kill mankind. A group of survivors is under siege from fierce trucks at the Dixie Boy truck stop gas station and they have to fight to survive.
When a mysterious comet passes close within the Earth, machines all over the World come alive and go on homicidal rampages. A group of people in a desolate Truck Stop are held hostage by a gang of homicidal 18-wheelers. The frightened people set out to defeat the killer machines...or be killed by them.
Years ago, Stephen King described this as a "moron movie". Couldn't have said it better myself, I just would have added a little more colorful wording that IMDb won't allow me to use here. Anyway, as of the date of this review, this is the only movie King has directed. More then likely, that would be a good thing, and more then likely, it's because directing takes a lot more work then just writing at a keyboard. I'm not saying Stephen King is lazy, I just think he was out of his jurisdiction with this one. It plays out just like the rest of his work, a high body count, many bloody on screen kills, and a whole lot of lack of logic. A comet has surrounded the earth, and it will cause man made machines to go completely bonkers for a set amount of time. The movie is divided into three parts. First part, I would say roughly the first 40 minutes, everything as well as nothing happens. An ice cream truck drives itself without a driver, and a lawnmower operates without an operator ( I would like to have a mower like this one day!). A meat slicer comes to life unplugged. Along with all the power appliances causing Black And Deckers sales to tank, we got some things happening that...don't even have anything to do with power. For example, the comet seems to be screwing with hydraulics also, causing sprinklers to go off randomly. Interesting. Second part of the film, traps several people within a gas station, now its bad enough the comet is surrounding the earth, but now we have several trucks circling the truck stop, entrapping its workers and customers. Third part of the film, is the final battle....they've found a heap of weapons that they can use against the trucks that wreak havoc. Now, I can't knock this around too much, I will admit, it was a bit entertaining, however, I just cannot call it a good movie. A child is steam rolled over, which automatically knocks 5 stars off the score, however, those stars are replenished when an ATM announces that Stephen King is an asshole. Oh, and hope you like AC/DC, several songs play all throughout the film, right down to the ending credits. For many, they will like Maximum Overdrive, which I felt was not real scary, quite violent at times, though. The spotlight shines on the green faced truck, with the glowing red eyes, and the jaw dropping smile...wicked clever looking! However, a cool looking truck isn't enough to save this movie from riding the fence. Not good enough to be rewarded 6 stars, not bad enough to give it 4, I'm giving Maximum Overdrive a solid 5 stars. King? Stay out of the directors chair.
When Stephen King first set out to make this movie, he was up front about wanting to make a schlock film. Boy did he succeed. I was on the fence about whether or not to give this a great rating or a terrible one because this has got to be right up there with "Plan 9 From Outer Space" as one of the worst films ever made. But my god is it a good time, as long as you don't take it too seriously. I mean, in the world of "Overdrive" people's bodies seem to pop like grapes when trucks hit them, so how seriously can you take that? And there are some other great moments of cheesy stupidity that will have viewers barking with appalled laughter.
Unfortunately the elements of the film that are simply, and unpleasantly bad overpower the film and weigh down what laughs there are, which is why I settled on a poorer-than-poor rating. The bride character played by Yeardley Smith is one of the shrillest, most grating of characters that I have ever had the misfortune to see. The acting is so campy they may as well be singing "Kumbaya." This is funny most of the time, but as in the case of Smith, and a truly disgusting Bible salesman, watching this film feels like a waste of heartbeats.
However, upon seeing this film a second time, this seems like a good movie for drinking games, so there can be some use made of this. As for whether or not King should be put to death for this film's existence, I think I'll let him speak for himself: "*on writing a stinker*...it happens; as the author of "Maximum Overdrive", I'm qualified to say so." ("On Writing", p.216).
MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE doesn't work on any level. As a comedy it's obvious and asinine, as a horror film it's simply not scary, and as an action film it's a bore.
While no copies have popped up anywhere, there is supposedly an uncut VHS tape that was released when the film came to VHS. This alleged tape not only has the infamous exploding head steamroller scene, but also an additional 4 minutes of footage. a5c7b9f00b
