Innocent people are being brutally murdered on the streets of New York City by a uniformed police officer. As the death toll rises and City Hall attempts a cover-up, Frank McCrae heads the investigation. A young cop, Jack Forrest, finds himself under arrest as the chief suspect, having been the victim of a set-up by the real killer and a mysterious woman phone-caller. Forrest, his girlfriend Theresa, and McCrae set out to solve the puzzle before the Maniac Cop can strike again.
In New York City, people are slain and strangled to death brutally on the open street. All witnesses agree that the murderer was in a cop's uniform. Soon the police searches and finds a suspect in its own ranks: Jack Forrest, turned in by his own wife. To prove his innocence, he has to investigate on his own.
Maniac Cop is a great exploitation film. It has some truly inspired moments. Bruce Campbell is great and the Maniac Cop himself is a worthy creation in the horror genre. Most people will avoid this and they shouldn't, because for the budget and limitations it's a great flick. Fix a nice big bowl of popcorn and enjoy a great horror cheapie.
Surprisingly effective chiller, that holds up to viewing by adults, not just gore-crazed pre-teens (as I was when I first saw it). Most of the acting is laughably bad, and the direction is poor, but there's an eerie quality to the whole thing. I'd forgotten that it wasn't just a horror film - there's real police work and investigation going on, and it plays better as a straight mystery. You've got the "wrong man accused" angle, and the mystery of Cordell's unexplained fate. It works very well.
There's an attempt to add pathos to the killer, and for once they actually pull it off. The extended flashback to the prison is nicely done, and didn't seem like a cheap attempt to add depth. It's explained that Cordell actually has a legitimate beef with some people. His death in the showers is still shocking to this day, and the nowadays-rare "don't cut away from the stabbing and slicing" attitude in that scene gives it real power.
In Japan a special cut was aired for television that features several prolonged story pieces that can't be found in the Theatrical Version of this movie. This adds up to a toal difference of nearly six minutes between both cuts.
In Britain the movie was released cut on VHS, whereas the DVD features the original uncensored Theatrical Version. One can find a comparison with pictures here. a5c7b9f00b
