In 18th century North America during the French and Indian War, a white man adopted by the last members of a dying tribe called the Mohicans unwittingly becomes the protector of the two daughters of a British colonel, who have been targeted by Magua, a sadistic and vengeful Huron warrior who has dedicated his life to destroying the girls' father for a past injustice. The last members of a dying Native American tribe, the Mohicans -- Uncas, his father Chingachgook, and his adopted half-white brother Hawkeye -- live in peace alongside British colonists. But when the daughters of a British colonel are kidnapped by a traitorous scout, Hawkeye and Uncas must rescue them in the crossfire of a gruesome military conflict of which they wanted no part: the French and Indian War. Michael Mann's films are never bad, but this one truly is a beauty. Based on Cooper's novel and an earlier screenplay, the film could have come along as "okay", nothing more. Yet Mann makes it breathtaking thanks to three key elements: Daniel Day-Lewis (the method-man looks even more here heroic than Gibson's William Wallace in Braveheart!), the photography (the scenery and battles are filmed with equal beauty, the already excellent Spinoti never surpassed his work on this) and one of the best action scores ever (the themes by Trevor Jones are among the greatest music ever associated to the film industry). "Last of the Mohicans" is also a very smart romantic portrayal, thanks to it's pragmatism and impartiality, and above all, the film feels honest and authentic; that's something you rarely get in a historical epic, for at heart this is what Mann's film remains. It just also happens to be an unusually good one! OK, so this film is quite old in comparison to modern types of western genres, however, it still manages to keep the audiences attention drawn constantly. Michael Mann (director or other great film "Heat"), without a doubt has employed some of his greatest skills in directing this cinematic masterpiece! This film is quite a mix of different themes, the most obvious one being a western, although Mann beautifully weaves in the love interest between Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeline Stowe, without 'over doing it' like how so many other films these days tend to do. I'm not particularly one for watching drippy love stories, but this film hit it right on the mark. Not too much, just the right amount. Right now that's said...

The locations are astounding, I'm not quite sure where all the filming locations are but it certainly caught my gaze the first time I saw it. The soundtrack is also incredibly good, especially the inspiring fiddle music playing all the while Daniel Day-Lewis chases after the bad Indians up the mountain. The battle scene at the British occupied fort is also another great piece of filming as it somehow leaves one feeling that they are present!

There are just so many things that I could comment on it could take pages & pages to provide an acceptable critique on how great this film is and the amazing feeling it leaves the audience with. Hopefully this brief critique I have produced will inspire others who have never seen the film to go out and watch it!! Mann, who's best known for such urban crime dramas as "Vice" and "Manhunter," is equally at home whether the chase concerns a cigarette boat or a birch-bark canoe. He brings the same flair pairing action and style to The Last of the Mohicans, an attempt to resurrect and redefine the American hero. Set in 1757, during the French and Indian War for control of the North American colonies, the two last members of a dying Mohican Indian tribe, Chingachgook (Russell Means) and his son Uncas (Eric Schweig), along with an adopted white man, Nathaniel "Hawkeye" Poe (Daniel Day-Lewis), agree to accompany the two daughters, Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and Alice (Jodhi May), of British Colonel Edmund Munro (Maurice Roëves) to Fort William Henry in Albany, New York. Along the way, they must fight French soldiers and a vengeful Huron warrior named Magua (Wes Studi), who has vowed to kill the Colonel and his daughters to avenge a past injustice. The screenplay for this movie, written by American filmmakers Michael Mann (who also directed the movie) and Christopher Crowe, was adapted in part from The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 (1826), a novel by American author James Fenimore Cooper [1789-1851], as well as from a previous film adaptation, The Last of the Mohicans (1936) (1936). Sedition basically means "making trouble against the government." Sedition can range from simple incitement to rebel all the way to high treason. Magua explains to General Montcalm (Patrice Chéreau) that his... village and lodges were burned. Magua's children were killed by the English. I was taken a slave by the Mohawk who fought for the Grey Hair. Magua's wife believed he was dead and became the wife of another man. Magua became blood brother to the Mohawk, to be free. But always in his heart, he is Huron. And his heart will be whole again on the day the Grey Hair and all his seed are dead. It's called a gunstock club. a5c7b9f00b
