Master Cheif returns to a Covenant Dominated Earth on a mission to kill the final alien leader. Meanwhile, the Arbiter, Johnson, and Keyes form a loose alliance and escape from Delta Halo. The Covenant is ripped in civil war, and the Elites along with a handful of other alien races become sympathetic to the human cause. Delta Halo's impromptu dis-activation has brought all of the Halos to a "remote activation phase". They can be activated from a facility called the ark, which happens to be on Earth.
Master Chief and the Arbiter must join together to attack the Covenant and destroy the Flood.
After a 3 year absence, Halo 3 has finally made it. But lets cut right to the quick here: this game is awesome.
Almost all the people that have bought Halo 3 have probably been wondering what happens in the story, so when they buy it they immediately play through the campaign. That is out of pure speculation by the way. Which leads me to the reason why I'm righting this comment.
The story of Halo 3 is one of the most twisted and darkest stories to ever be put in a game. Sure the first game led to self-explanatory action with an unfolding story to go with it, and the second game told a more complex and diverse story that had many twists that no one expected. There were books and other novelty items that filled the gaps between the history all the way to how Halo 3 begins.
But what makes Halo 3's story so dark is it's atmosphere. The story has more twists and turns than any other game before it. Bungie promised the fans that it would play out like The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King, in which characters die, destinies are made, and above all else, the end of a long running war.
The game does relate to this, but there remains a question behind every theory: characters within the game WILL die, but who?
Destinies WILL be made, but who's will and what will they sacrifice in order in achieve it?
Sacrifices WILL be made, but under what exchange?
And this is me speaking out for all the fans and I AM telling the honest truth: I did cry at certain parts of this game because I am a TRUE fan, and if you are a true fan of the series it will be your choice if you wish to do the same.
I am proud for what Bungie has done. They have put so much effort into creating and imagining this wonderful series that in the end I actually shed tears, just like I did with Lord of the Rings.
This IS the only game to have ever touched my heart and taught me that we all have something to fight for, even if it means giving up destiny, the ones we love, and our lives to do so.

My goodness.... Well, this game is simply amazing. It has everything; sleek, refined graphics, generally improved game play, a multitude of awesome weapons, an incredible storyline, excellent voice acting,......... Truly, the list just goes on and on. This finale to the triumvirate cements both Halo and Bungie's place among the all time greats in the video game world. Whether you're a tried and true hardcore Halo fan, or a newbie just getting into the craze, you must get this game. It is truly an incredible experience, not only to behold, but to be the most integral part of. Plus, there is online Co-op play, so you can go through the story mode with an online friend, or more than one!
Of particular note are the voice performances of Keith David (the Arbiter) and Robert Davi (the Ship Master Elite, a very cool returning minor character from Halo 2).
The only downside, I suppose, is that Michael Wincott, who voiced the Prophet of Truth in Halo 2, does not return in the role for Halo 3. While his replacement is by no means poor, the new voice simply does not have that metallic, sinister quality that Wincott's does.
That being said, long live the Arbiter and Master Chief!!!! Halo 3 is everything it was built up to be, and more.
During the course of the story and in the announcement trailer, Chief recieves broadcasts from Cortana while she's under the influence of the Gravemind, which led many fans to think the AI was corrupted or rampant. However, these versions of Cortana are copies and damaged files. Cortana herself is not evil. Official press release shows Halo 3 to have earned over $170 million, becoming the biggest single-day sales event in entertainment history, until the release of Grand Theft Auto 4.

While Bungie did leave Microsoft, Microsoft owns the rights to the Halo name and universe, so there will never be a Halo game on any other system. However, Bungie still retains the rights for their Marathon franchise (the precursor and story basis for Halo), and it seems likely that they will do a Marathon remake at some point in time. They did say that little will actually change and they still plan to work almost exclusively with Microsoft and their consoles, but being independent means they they will not only see a bigger share of the return on sales, but they will be free to work on whatever they wish and are not obliged to continue the Halo franchise. But there is talks of a new Halo project. This new Halo project is going to be a new trilogy and Peter Jackson will do some of the work on it, supposedly. As for Halo 4, the story did end with Master Chief lost in space. So there may be another Halo game leaving off with this one. Only time can tell now what Bungie will do.
It is worth noting that since Microsoft does own the Halo name and story, they could have another developer make a new Halo game, much like Bioware and Obsidian did with the two Knights Of The Old Republic and Neverwinter Nights games.
Halo Reach will be a prequel to Halo (2001). After Halo Reach, the Halo series will be over.
The above statement is no longer the case. The series is now being taken over by 343 Industries. At the E3 convention, they officially announced Halo 4. A page on Xbox.com has been set up.
