A mysterious virus hits an isolated elementary school, transforming the kids into a feral swarm of mass savages. An unlikely hero must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives.
The teacher and aspirant writer Clint Hadson returns from New York to the house of his mother in Ft. Chicken, Illinois, to write a horror novel and work as substitute in the local elementary school. He meets his former schoolmate and crush Lucy McCormick, who is also a teacher and is dating the strong teacher Wade Johnson. Meanwwhile the student Shelly Linker eats a chicken nugget contaminated with a virus. During Clint's class, Shelley is bullied by the boy Patriot and bites him on the face. During the playtime, the infection is spread in the yard among the students that eat the school staff. Soon the teachers find under siege of the zombie students. Will they survive the attack?
Before beginning my thoughts, I have to commend the creators of the film for thinking of such a wonderful idea for a horror comedy. Teachers having to fight off zombified children in an elementary school? Needless to say, I was sold as soon as I read the plot summary. Now, since this was a horror comedy film, I'll be reviewing each of those components individually.
The Comedy:
This was undoubtedly the best thing about the film. I was very pleased with how funny it was. Children are portrayed in a surprisingly hilarious way in the film, just with how mean-spirited and foul- mouthed they are. It's quite shocking in a good way. The delivery of the actors was great. Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson immediately come to mind as standouts. Overall, the way that they showed average everyday teachers reacting to an undead uprising at their workplace was extremely humorous.
The Horror:
In my opinion, this is unfortunately where the film falls flat. There a couple very creepy scenes (there is one including a car that is absolutely brilliant), but my main issue with it was how they would use too many camera tricks to hide the fact that they were hitting zombies, such as using wild shaky cam or cutting to a different shot right as someone gets hit. It almost felt like they were trying to hide the fact that they had no gore effects. Other than that, though, the horror is okay.
Overall, I'd recommend this one. Even though the horror didn't do it for me, the comedy more than makes up for it. Also, I've read many reviews in which people thought the horror was fantastic, so maybe it's just my personal taste getting in the way of my enjoyment. Give this one a watch, it's pretty darn good.
A couple of years ago the internet was full of pictures and rumors that a major retailer of chicken nuggets used a sort of "pink slime" to form their chicken nuggets. A pink slime that includes ground up parts such as feet and beaks. Followup stories and videos widely disproved that but rumors of food quality die hard.
So this movie begins with a 3-minute scene inside a chicken farm, which takes chicken meat, even with maggots crawling on the meat, grinds it all up into a pink slime, makes nuggets, partially cooks them, and then ships them to the local school. There we see a young girl being served some nuggets and when she bites into one a black ooze comes out. At that point I almost had to go to the bathroom and hug my toilet.
But that scene sets up the rest of the movie, the nuggets are carrying a virus that turns people into zombies. In a slightly later scene the young girl is in class with scabs on her face, two boys are using very abusive language towards her, when she springs up and chews on the face of one boy. Through this process eventually all the kids in school turn into zombies. The teachers then must use their ingenuity to ward off the kids and save themselves. Baseball bats and hockey stocks come in handy.
Perhaps the inspiration for this story was a chance for teachers for once to have a genuine reason to beat up and kill the children.
The star is Elijah Wood as Clint, a former student at this school in Fort Chicken, Illinois. Now an aspiring writer working on his horror novel of a boat that is possessed, he takes a gig as a substitute teacher this day.
I believe this movie achieves its objectives very well, but it is not by any stretch a good movie. I saw it on DVD from my local library.
It makes an occasionally spirited pretense of injecting the tensions of the United States's educational system into a familiar zombie-siege scenario.
