Though she's held captive, Jessica Martin manages to contact an unsuspecting young man via his cell phone. As he becomes her only lifeline to thwarting the abduction of her young son, the good Samaratin soon gets way more than he bargained for.
A young man receives a call on his cellular phone from a woman who says she's been kidnapped, and thinks she's going to be killed soon, along with her husband and son who the kidnappers have gone after next. The catch? She doesn't know where she is... and his cell phone battery might go dead soon.
I went and saw cellular this past weekend at my local movie theatre, and I am pleased to tell you that this movie kept me on the edge of my seat the whole entire time. I think that this movie had an excellent plot and story line to it. When the girl got kidnapped and thrown into an attic connected wires to the phone that the kidnappers had smashed to get a hold of somebody. Once she did she winded up calling a guys cell phone and as the movie goes on the guy didn't believe her at first but after a while she finally convinced him that she was actually kidnapped. The kidnappers had actually targeted her husband and kid and were threatening to kill them. I give this movie a rating of 10 stars out of 10 stars because it was that good of a movie.
I'm just going to ignore all this nagging in user-comments about plot holes and implausible events, because, folks, this is an action/thriller. You watch it for the suspense and the thrills, not for the realistic drama-situations. And if you take it for what it is, then you end up with a decent, fast-paced, well-written (in terms of one suspenseful scene leading to another) entertaining movie. A lot of the situations might not be very original (except for the basic cellular idea) and you will have to live with that painful happy ending (but then again, you honestly didn't expect Kim Basinger to die, did you?). But if you just go with it and don't think too much about it, there's a big change you will enjoy this movie. I did enjoy it because of the fast-paced action and thrills, the decent acting & directing and the occasional little plot-twist.
Chris Evans might not be the world's greatest actor, but he did a pretty good job in CELLULAR. I had fun when he was in desperate need of a battery-charger. Kim Basinger may have had a little too much of that plastic surgery, but she still is a good actress. Jason Statham was believable as the bad cop/kidnapper. And William H. Macy was very likable. I loved seeing him do that cool slide-from-behind-the-sofa-and-shoot-move. And then saving the goldfish was too sweet.
So enough, enough with bashing this movie and saying it was bad. Sure, this isn't over-intelligent thought-provoking cinema, but it is a fun ride and an above average action/thriller. The only thing I didn't like was that pretty dumb house/techno-song that came up on the soundtrack in the middle of the movie (and was repeated over the end-credits). But that's just a minor complaint. Now, I haven't seen PHONEBOOTH yet, but I did like CELLULAR as much as I liked LIBERTY STANDS STILL, another thriller based on a continuous cellphone-conversation (with an actual message, I might add). So check it out too.
Chris Evans is blithely likable despite a few faux-Cruise mannerisms, Basinger makes a vividly frightened yet resourceful woman in peril, and William H. Macy scores as a mild L.A. cop who lets out his inner macho.
