When rich rancher El Jefe learns that his unmarried daughter is pregnant, he offers $1 million to anyone who brings him the head of the man responsible - Alfredo Garcia. Two of the bounty hunters, Quill and Sappensly, hire various people to go out and find Garcia for which they are offering a few thousand dollars. Piano player Bennie is one of those and as his prostitute girlfriend Elita knows Garcia, they set off to find him. When they learn Garcia is already dead, Bennie digs him up to get the head but only death and misery follows for everyone concerned. A family scandal causes a wealthy and powerful Mexican rancher to make the pronouncement--'Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia!' Two of the bounty-hunters thus dispatched encounter a local piano-player in their hunt for information. The piano-player does a little investigating on his own and finds out that his girlfriend knows of Garcia's death and last resting place. Thinking that he can make some easy money and gain financial security for he and his (now) fiancée, they set off on this goal. Of course, this quest only brings him untold misery, in the form of trademark Peckinpah violence. The puzzle here is why this flawless film gets such a low rating, and has half a dozen pathetic and negative reviews. It is not even slightly boring, but intensely gripping throughout. It is not badly paced, but follows a perfectly judged narrative trajectory. It is beautifully written by its joint authors, superbly performed without exception by the entire cast, and directed by a genius. I don't think I've seen acting with such conviction. We can identify with Bennie. The fact is, we are all losers. We don't know why we are here, and whatever happens, our friends will die, and we will end up dead ourselves. On the other hand, nobody loses all the time. This is Shakespearean, up there with Titus and Lear, a mind-expanding vision and a revelation. In the end, the dollars are worthless, it's the struggle, and the fighting spirit, which have value. I have watched it many times, and it never disappoints. If this were a Japanese movie starring Toshiro Mifune or Shintaro Katsu it would long since have been considered a masterpiece, at least of its genre. But us yanks don't like to see caucasians in suits behave in unseemly ways with guns. Too bad. A really brilliant & riveting movie. Terrific acting. Terrific pace. Terrific ending.
