In the year 2065, the next great assault against an invading race of phantom-like aliens is about to be launched. Dr. Aki Ross, a brilliant young scientist, races to find the invaders' secrets, not only to save the planet, but herself as well after her body is infected by alien particles. She teams up with the prestigious Deep Eyes military squadron, led by her old friend Grey Edwards. But as Aki, her mentor Dr. Sid, and Grey work toward a peaceful end, the scheming General Hein devises a plot to eradicate the aliens in one swift, destructive blow...even if it destroys the Earth right along with them.
Loosely based on the highly acclaimed video game series "Final Fantasy". Set in 2065, the world is a barren wasteland invaded by alien life-forms known as Phantoms. Determined to stop them for good, a beautiful woman named Dr. Aki Ross must find the seven spirits to destroy the Phantoms once and for all, unfortunately she is dying from a fatal Phantom-related sickness. She is accompanied by her mentor Dr. Sid (the movie's version of "Cid") and the Deep Eyes Squadron.
This movie was some serious eye-candy. Other than that, however, it was a waste of time. Too bad good movie making has gone out of style. It preached and nagged about gaia/mother earth to the point of making me sick. Go push your religion down someone else's throat. I'm sick of it. Anyway, that seemed to be the whole point of the movie was to convince me that the earth is some sort of living being. its a huge rock covered with water and air, okay? Volcanos are destructive to the environment and all life around them. Does that mean gaia is a wrist-cutting, self-mutilator? In that case, she needs rehab and counselling. In short, this movie sucked! ...but it looked good doing it.
While knowing nothing about the video games of Final Fantasy, but knowing that movies based on video games usually doesn't work out, I didn't think that Final Fantasy The Spirits Within would be any good. But already in the very beginning I was impressed by the beautiful shots and the great atmosphere. The CGI are really unbelievable and the characters are very well made. There's a close eye on details e.g. on vehicles, which is a good plus. The story lacks somewhat in originality, it does have some clichés, but nevertheless the story is good. In overall it's a decent movie, with no major plot holes or goofs.

The film's plot gets so convoluted no nongamer older than 14 will be able to follow it all.
While it is still titled as Final Fantasy, this movie is only thematically related to the Final Fantasy franchise. It's noted that the Final Fantasy games are known for always having an entirely different cast and setting for each game. This movie does however feature small references to the games, and the character Doctor Sid has the same name as Cid who appears in most of the games. a5c7b9f00b
