A noir send-up. A narrator introduces himself at a Hollywood party: he's Harry Lockhart, a thief from New York, in L.A. for a screen test. He meets Gay Perry, a glitzy private eye who's to school him for his role; there's Harmony Lane, a wannabe actress whose time has passed; the host is an aging actor who starred in detective movies, plus his daughter, with starlet looks and a choppy past. The next day, Gay and Harry stake out a house where Gay is to take surreptitious photographs for a client - what they find is a corpse. From there, twists and connections abound and bodies pile up. Who's double-crossing whom? And, has Harry found Harmony too late to save himself from misery?
Mistaken for an actor, small-time crook, Harry Lockhart, finds himself in the midst of the Hollywood community. Hes paired up with private detective "Gay Perry" to get some training for his role, but things begin to get weird when they witness a real murder.
I give it a 3/10 because it did make me laugh. There were a lot of funny lines. But funny lines and situations do not make a good movie and they do not make a sloppy movie better. It was like a movie that was written under the influence of some banned substance.
I'd put a 'SUCK' into this review for every time the big 'F' word is used in the movie but that would likely cause me to exceed the maximum number of words/letters. It is so pervasive that they even make a joke about it and do a phony apology for all those in the "midwest". Give me a break. If I had not already mourned the valuable time I spent watching this movie, I'd have to hate it just for that Elitist Hollywood arrogance.
I gave a three but after remembering all I hated about it, the laughs were not enough to really earn that. It deserves a 1.
Shane black writes and directs this hilarious crime comedy caper starring Robert Downey jr, Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan. Downey jr and Kilmer have great chemistry onscreen, with each actor complementing each others performances. Downey jr's Lockhart and kilmer's gay perry are made all the more memorable by Shane black's fast-paced, quip-filled dialogue. Michelle Monaghan plays the extremely adorable and hilarious Harmony, who was a very pleasant surprise for me in this film. The plot of the movie is really enthralling, with constant twist and turns. My one criticism of the movie is its villain, who is quite weak. However the performances of Downey jr, Kilmer and Monaghan more than make up for this. This is without a doubt one of the most quotable and funniest movies from the 2000's and really deserves more recognition. It is unmissable.
It's just a movie with no particular reason for existing, a flashy, trifling throwaway whose surface cleverness masks a self-infatuated credulity.
Clueless thief Harry Lockett (Robert Downey Jr.) runs into an audition for a detective movie audition, when he is pursued by the police, when an attempted toy store robbery goes wrong, which his partner is shot and killed. Harry, mistaken for an actor auditioning for a role in the film, unwittingly wins a role in the film and is invited to attend a Christmas party hosted by former actor Harlan Dexter (Corbin Bernsen). At the party, Harry meets tough private detective Gay Perry (Val Kilmer) and reunites with aspiring actress Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), whom was Harry's childhood friend. As Gay Perry teaches Harry lessons on being a detective to prepare him for when the film begins production. Harry soon finds himself caught up in a murder mystery, when Dexter's estranged daughter Veronica is murdered, which soon becomes complicated, when Harmony's sexually abused sister Jenna commits suicide and Harmony asks Harry to investigate. Suspecting that Veronica Dexter's murder and Jenna Lane's suicide are somewhat connected and that Jenna's death was no suicide, but murder. Harry and Gay Perry supported by Harmony set out to uncover the truth behind the murder of Veronica Dexter and the death of Jenna Lane and the pair begin to suspect that one of the party guests could be the murderer and they uncover a conspiracy behind the murder case. a5c7b9f00b
