The nerd teenager Reed Richards has been researching teleport since he was a kid, helped by his best friend Ben Grimm.. During a high-school scientific fair, he is invited by Dr. Franklin Storm to join his research team in his institute in New York. Reed teams up with Dr. Storm's son and daughter Johnny Storm and Susan "Sue" Storm and the outcast Victor Von Doom and they succeed to send a monkey to another dimension. Soon they learn that the institute has an agreement with NASA to send astronauts to the other universe. However they decide to go by themselves to be the first humans to reach the place. However there is an accident and they are all affected by the power in the planet. Further, they achieve super-powers, but Victor is left behind. What will happen to the researchers?
Four young outsiders teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe which alters their physical form in shocking ways. The four must learn to harness their new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
I went into the cinema ready to make up my own mind. I was so disappointed when I heard that the film was a let-down. Well, it completely bombed basically. I loved the trailer. I was enthralled unbeknownst to me that the film advertised was in fact a FF reboot.
And that's what still sells it to me now despite all the flack it's getting. This is a reboot. It's a stand-alone film with inspiration from famous comics and the characters within them. I guess it's easy for me to say as I don't have any attachment to the comics or their beloved characters.
I adore the fresh, grounded approach to known stories, in this case the younger characters are more modern and seem to deal with 21st century issues. The superpowers are explained by science much like other superhero films but in a way that seems like it could quite possibly happen in the news today. It sounds silly to say that it doesn't feel far-fetched by the atmosphere that engaged me leading me into a reality that made it seem possible.
Using a body horror angle to introduce the characters' powers was a breath of fresh, cool air. To show these characters as real people would behave was something new that I felt needed to be done to refresh the superhero genre. Some effects seemed a little gimmicky but only after a friend pointed it out to me. I think they could've actually taken the whole story in this direction (as the horror was only hinted at and quickly brushed aside) however they chose to skip ahead and get to the action.
Not a lot of people enjoyed the pace of the film, they complained about the lack of action and the slow-burning build that seemed to drag. I however, loved the detail that went into the set-up for these characters as I'm not easily engaged by constant action. And as a reboot, it seemed important and such a good opportunity to flesh out a completely new origin. I think people wanted to see more of the superheroes and didn't care much for the people behind them. Despite this, the characters personalities' were quite one-dimensional which explains why the first 2 acts fell short for a lot of people.
This leads to an issue with the third act, which for the length of the film, seems like an after-thought. In my mind, they could've gone two ways. First, they could've given more running time to allow for a better built-up, fleshed out and authentic action sequence that threaded better into the story rather than choosing a dark and brooding character to suddenly just go, 'you know what? Screw Earth.' Or, they should've made the final act about what their new bodies would mean for their place in society i.e. make the antagonist the military/government that tries to take their freedom (crudely described; apologies). THEN we could introduce Doctor Doom in the sequel. Get where I'm going?
But alas, this was not the case and therefore this was far from a perfect film. However, I still enjoyed it as a whole based on the sum of it's good parts.
I went in with very low expectations. I didn't find it to be a total trainwreck, worth 9/100 on review sites etc. while watching it. But, a few hours later, when I think about it; I have to be honest : it's not very good. Basic stuff to poke - although it's almost too easy : the characters never look like teenagers. Hard to identify / find them credible when they look like 30 really. And some actors (the big evil corporation guy especially) were just not good. Special effects were also of another era. My partner described them as 1990s' level, I found them to be direct to video level. And this is supposed to be a summer tentpole, so that's not acceptable. And finally: the story lacks a point. Half the movie setting an origin, another half not going anywhere... Pretty poor in retrospect. As a fan of the source material since my earliest years, the sanction has to be severe - it's simply not good.
The cast are some of the most promising actors of their generation, but what chemistry there is between them is swept away by wave after wave of expository dialogue and ludicrous exclamation.
