The G.I. Joe team is framed for crimes against the country by Zartan, disguised as the President, and Cobra Commander has all the world leaders under his influence, with their advanced warheads headed towards innocent populaces around the world. Outnumbered and outgunned, the surviving team members form a plan with their original leader, General Joseph Colton, to rescue the President and face off Cobra Commander, his accomplices and the world leaders.
The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
Wow, this movie sucked. If not for the fact that there was a line minimum for reviews, I would've stopped at " Wow, this movie sucked". I'm not sure how the actors got 1/4 of the way through filming without feeling like they were creating such a horrible movie. No paycheck could've been worth showing up on a daily basis to create more horrible scenes for such a dreadful film. At some point, someone had to feel a little professional pride. I'm almost positive that Channing Tatum asked to be killed off at the beginning just so he wouldn't have to show up on the set anymore. Part 1 was pretty good . How could the sequel be this god awful?
Lady Jaye was hot. Since I had to give this at least one star, that's where the star goes. I'm actually ticked at myself for watching this. Think I'm gonna watch Sharknado 1 & 2 just to get the image of this out of my head.
Assuming charge of directing duties from Stephen Sommers, director John M. Chu had the unenviable task of ameliorating the franchise following the much-maligned G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Based on the line of iconic action figures from renowned manufacturers Hasbro, Retaliation was initially scheduled for release last summer. However, it was delayed several months to allow the conversion to 3D.
An unconventional progression sees almost a complete overhaul of cast from its predecessor, the only juxtaposing strand being Duke (Channing Tatum) and Snake Eyes (Ray Park). The revamp is intact with other characters being discarded, an almost unprecedented feat for a direct sequel. Another remaining thread from The Rise of Cobra is the US president being replaced by an imposter, Zartan, played to perfection by Jonathan Pryce. The doppelganger orders an assault on the G.I. Joe base, managing to annihilate all but three survivors: Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), Flint (DJ Cotrona) and Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki). Zartan also orchestrates the escape of Cobra Commander, the eternal nemesis of the Joe's. Cobra then leads a covert network of nefarious miscreants in their quest for world domination. The solitary obstacle in their grandiose scheme is the remaining Joe's.
Designed primarily for merchandising and to attract the preadolescent demographic, adults may be forgiven for thinking that G.I. Joe: Retaliation is also written and directed by them. The sequel manifests a level of intelligence that may appeal to a ten year old, but the narrative may prove inane for all other age brackets. Furthermore, the reconditioned characters may test the comprehension of those not fully acquainted with the background of G.I. Joe's.
In terms of performances, Dwayne Johnson exudes charisma and shows a penchant for humor. Retaliation shows Johnson right in his element. Secondly, Snake Eyes, the fan favorite from the cartoons, emanates authority despite being bereft of any dialogues. The rest of the cast, particularly the villains, are devoid of any personality. Jonathan Pryce as the Machiavellian president is the pick of the bad bunch with a few memorable quips.
The action sequences, the main selling point of the movie, are well choreographed in general. One scene specifically, an exhilarating mountain peak escape, is the highlight. It illustrates an epic scale, augmented by the 3D as well. The postponement to allow the inclusion of 3D is worth its weight in gold, especially in the action scenes. The 3D elevates the action, rendering it a larger than life perception. Chu, having previously directed the Step Up series, is in his comfort zone with regards to the well-choreographed action. Unfortunately, the non- stop adrenaline fueled action leaves minimal room for the story or characters to flourish. Retaliation is laden with an overdose of action and the pacing of the movie suffers as a consequence. Perhaps it could have been more like Avengers Assemble, allowing ample time for both action and the maturity of characters as well.
The screenplay is also aided by real world politics. In the original, the villains decimated the Eiffel Tower with a biochemical attack. They went one better in Retaliation with the wholesale obliteration of the city of London. It also serves as a tribute to the resilience of USA, something which has been delineated ad nauseam in recent years. All in all, the movie offers a myopic and partisan perspective of America and the rest of the world.
In conclusion, Retaliation is arguably better than its antecessor. It is essentially a representation of a child's imagination running wild, brimming with an incoherent plot and mindless action. It may invoke nostalgia for G.I. Joe enthusiasts or even prove fun fare for some viewers but sadly, it is tantamount to nothing more than your average Joe.
Retaliation is no masterpiece, but it’s a movie whose fun doesn’t feel like a four-letter word -- popcorn entertainment that not only rivals what you see during summer, but surpasses what you see from Sommers.
The entire question is left deliberately vague. We are told that both the GI Joes in the field and at their base have been wiped out with the exception of Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Lady Jaye and Flint. However, we never see it and it is perfectly possible that any of the characters may have survived in the same way that the main characters in this film did or simply left GI Joe in between this film and its predecessor. The only character we know to be dead for sure is Duke whom we know is killed in the desert attack. Yes and no. In the UK, the classic 9-inch GI Joe doll was called Action Man. Inspired by the success of Star Wars figures in the early 1980s, a smaller 3-inch version was introduced called Action Force. A backstory was published in a series of tie-in comics (Battle Action Force) with the terrorist army of Baron Ironblood and his Red Shadows attempting to take over the world and combated by the United Nation's own military unit, Action Force (composed of Z-force infantry company, SAS-force special operations team, Q-force naval squadron and Space Force star fleet). In 1987, Marvel UK launched the Action Force comic (initially a standalone title, but later appearing in the UK Transformers comic under the name "G.I. Joe the Action Force"). These were a mix of reprints of the US G.I. Joe comic book, and new UK-exclusive strips. The additional stories resulted in the UK version having a considerably different continuity to the US comic book, with major characters such as Zartan having completely different origins. Destro was left ambiguously in the tube while Storm Shadow and Cobra Commander escaped. Since the explosion caused by the warden took out the cooling system, we are left to surmise that he either died in the explosion, or in the resulting over-200-degree temperature. Alternatively though he may have survived so is either still a prisoner or was freed from his tube by the explosion and escaped. Cobra doesn't release him, simply stating, "You're out of the band." It's likely that Christopher Eccleston wasn't available to reprise his role or possibly the writers felt that there wouldn't have been much of a use for him in this particular film and so thought it best to leave him out but not arbitrarily kill him off. No, because the self-destruct mechanisms don't actually create a nuclear explosion, they destroy the warhead without triggering the fissile material so the fallout would be minimal. Considerably. For instance in the comics, Duke is a First Sergeant whilst in the film he is a Captain. Cobra Commander himself never knew Duke, was never a maimed soldier but a car salesman who turned against America after the failure of his business and death of his brother in the Vietnam War. In the British Action Force backstory, he was Marcus Kassels, the disgraced son of an aristocratic Swiss diplomat and scientific genius, and who served in the British Army and led a US platoon nicknamed "The Baron's Brigade" in the Korean War before being accused of a massacre of civilians. He fled to Africa where he became a mercenary, fighting in conflicts all over the world before forming his own private terrorist army, the Red Shadows and adopting the alias Baron Ironblood, based on his family's Latin motto of "Sanguineo Ferris" ("our blood is of iron"). After numerous defeats at the hands of Action Force he would abandon the Red Shadows and form the Cobra organisation, adopting the new identity of Cobra Commander. The "Extended Action Cut" is quite well named with this title because it is substantially better than the theatrical version—not only in the action department. A number of more violent moments are back, a few large ones that are completely new and surprisingly much more character development that even leads to some minor changes in the story. While American audiences will have to be patient to get their hands on the extended cut (it is Best Buy exclusive for the first weeks), British customers have it easier. All Blu-ray disc editions feature both the theatrical and the Extended Cut. In total, the Extended Cut runs approximately 12 minutes longer than the well-known theatrical version. a5c7b9f00b
