A soldier trained from birth is deemed obsolete and dumped on a waste planet where he is reluctantly taken in by a community of defenseless, stranded wayfarers. Sergeant Todd (Russell) is a veteran soldier for the an elite group of the armed forces of Earth. After being defeated by a new breed of genetically engineered soldiers, he is dumped on a waste planet and left for dead. He soon interacts with a group of crash survivors who lead out a peaceful existence on the planet. The peace is soon broken as the new breed of soldiers lands to eliminate the colony, which Sergeant Todd must defend. I suspect the reason there is so much disagreement about this film is that there are aspects which are really well done and others which are poorly done.

Right off the top, Kurt Russell gives an absolutely stunning performance, all the more because he does it with almost no speech. For an actor to bring out the nature of his character without speaking is a rare skill, and I don't think he could have done this much better. It is this performance which makes me think of Kurt Russell as a truly world-class talent rather than just a "celebrity".

The dark atmosphere set up at the beginning was also awesome. The believability of the sci-fi aspects was probably about average, but the visuals and the psychological setup were tops. It also develops the Todd's character and his interactions with the civilians nicely.

I was unfortunately disappointed they didn't go anywhere with this great start and great acting skill, and turned the end into nothing more than another action flick on the poor side of average. It also always bothers me when everything is not only black and white, but it's easy to see who's good and who's bad. But, I guess to have the big action ending you have to have that, but it ends the good part of the movie.

On the other hand, what was I looking for? A descent into depression at Todd's inability to cope with "real life", and long, grueling psychotherapy for him to recover? I'm being sarcastic with myself - but what wouldn't be boring, stupid, or moralistic? How about Todd learning that in morality, as in battle, not everything is as it seems? How about him developing a sense of self-determination and mode of operation with unusual logic because it's developed consciously as an adult instead of during childhood as with most of us? How about him learning tactics from his interaction with "normal" people which help him defeat the "better" soldiers in other ways when he can't use the battlefield ways he was taught because they are superior at them? Maybe even Todd learning how to reach a more satisfying, subtle and thoughtful (ironic?) kind of justice than the usual action movie "shoot-em up" ending? It really seems like they had some really good ideas but ran out of time and had to "sew up" production of this movie without having time to come up with any good ideas for the ending. Still, some really creepy, disturbing concepts and awe-inspiring acting from Russell. I really enjoyed it. A sort of futuristic "Shane", but with less sensibility. After an impressive first part, where all the brutality and senselessness of the soldier's discipline is depicted, follows an all too short and shallow second part, where the discovery of his own humanity in the contact with the shipwrecked colonists ought to have been explored more deeply and significantly. But it is, on the contrary, untimely interrupted to give place to an action-packed third part that is just a routine confrontation with the heavies. A better skilled filmmaker could have turned this material into a very interesting movie. Cinematography and art direction provide the same somber, unclean, unpleasant looks of movies like "Aliens - Resurrection" or "Lost in Space" (the movie). Soldier is a violent science fiction action film starring Kurt Russell as Sargeant Todd, an cold hardened space marine, whom was chosen at birth to be a soldier, whom is dumped and left to die on Arcadia 234, a garbage planet, when he is knocked unconscious in a fight with Caine 607 (Jason Scott Lee), a genetically engineered new breed of soldier. On the planet, Todd is befriend and nursed back to health by the survivors of a crashed spaceship, that have set up a colony on the planet and Todd struggles to adjust to living a normal life, due to his conditioning and training as a soldier. But, when Colonel Meckham (Jason Issacs), Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldier's commanding officer orders Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldiers to eliminate the crash survivors, as part of an training routine. Todd uses his combat skills and decides to protect the crash survivors and takes on the genetic engineered soldiers in a one man war. As an aside, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has stated that as far as he is concerned, his film Soldier is a 'sidequel' to Blade Runner, as it occurs in the same fictional milieu as Scott's film, although it is not actually a follow-up (Soldier was co-scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Peoples).

Reference- One of the battle names tattooed on Todd's arm. Tannhauser Gate, is from the speech Rutger Hauer recites near the end of the movie Directors commentary and a trailer a5c7b9f00b
