In ages past, a malevolent race called the Arakacians discovered a place where space-time leaked an immortality water. The Arakacians conquered the known universe for centuries, and were finally vanquished after the fountain chamber was sealed by freedom fighters. Upon discovery of a shard of the Loc-Nar (the evil orb from the original movie), a miner named Tyler becomes possessed by an insatiable hunger for power and a thirst for immortality. On his way to a planet which has the immortality fountain, Tyler makes a brief stop on F.A.K.K.² (Federation-Assigned Ketogenic Killzone) because its inhabitants carry some immortality water in their bodies. Tyler invades the space colony, wipes out most of the inhabitants, and kidnaps a beautiful woman named Kerrie. Enraged by Tyler's careless rampage, Kerrie's beautiful sister Julie vows to avenge her family and wipe out Tyler before he reaches the fountain.
After surviving an invasion on her peaceful homeworld, a beautiful avenger must stop a powerful psychopath from gaining immortality and rescue her kidnapped sister.
While the animation isn't bad in spots, this long-delayed sequel to the 1980 film has to be deemed a distinct disappointment in all other areas. The story is dull, predictable and plodding, totally lacking the humor and memorable characters that have made "Heavy Metal" such an enduring cult favorite. Imagine the "TAARNA" segment of the first film (which felt slightly padded at nearly 30 minutes) stretched to 90 minutes and that's what we have here Even the soundtrack (which is by far the best thing about this movie) is poorly used. The tunes are not integrated into the action and used to set the mood of scenes like they were in the original film.
Michael Ironside and Billy Idol (VERY inspired casting there!) provide some quality voice talent, but the script gives them hardly any memorable lines. The first film has endlessly quotable dialogue that me and my friends still spout out after all these years!
Unless you are a hardcore animation student, skip this mediocre mess and stick with the original. ** (2 stars)
In many ways this movie is better than the original. First the CGI is mixed with cell work to form a nice mix. Then, you have a gut gripping, seat ripping soundtrack. This movie also has an easy to follow plot line instead of multiple shorts about one object (a green ball). And then there is Julie Strain and artist Kevin Eastman. B-movie queen may have done her best performance ever and this is a good return of "TMNT" creator Kevin Eastman, who leads us on a action packed adventure through space. The humor is similar to Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards". If you liked Tarrna and Den from the first movie there are hints of those stories here. I was total blown away by this movie and can't wait to see it again.
