Paul Blart is a middle aged father and mall cop dealing with obesity. He hasn't dated since his failed marriage and for many times, Paul has failed becoming a police officer. But, in order to save Amy, his "crush", and the mall from a group of criminals looking to steal money, Paul Blart will do the impossible!
A single, albeit overweight, parent, Paul Blart lives a middle-classed lifestyle with his daughter, Maya, in New Jersey. After being mocked at in school, and having been unsuccessful to get employment with the local police services, he gets hired at a Mall as a security guard. He is attracted to a mall employee, Amy, but his attempts to woo her are foiled by a pen salesman. His continuing efforts to date Amy are hilarious as he must first adapt himself to cell phones and text messaging, which he attempts to do with his pal, Vijay's daughter's cell-phone. Things get complicated after he is instructed to train a new security guard - who has an agenda of his own - that will end up changing Paul's life forever.
Kevin James? He's that guy that is married to Leah Remini on TV. His primary feature for me is a source of consternation as to how he got someone as hot as that, even on TV. Outside of that, there is not much I have seen him in.
I'm not familiar with Jayma Mays, but she is cute, and I may check her out in that new show "Glee." She has a '65 Mustang convertible, so she is certainly cool.
That's it for anyone I could remotely remember from the movie.
So, the key question is, "Was it Funny?" Basically, NO. About as funny as Wild Hogs, and that was a big zero. The one chuckle I had was when he slid behind the column, but that was prominent in the trailers.
The type of physical humor perpetuated by Kevin James is worth a few good chuckles, to be sure. The trouble, though, is that it is only good for "X" many jokes.
For a basic plot summary, "Mall Cop" focuses on Paul Blart (James), an overweight mall "security officer" who continually fails to become a true gun-toting policeman. Just when his life seems to be at the lowest, however, he is thrust into a high-pressure hostage situation that tests his mettle.
The first thirty or so minutes of this film are legitimately funny, watching Blart blunder through situation after situation. James is an accomplished physical comedian who knows exactly how to comically move his oversized body.
Yet, the jokes stop being funny in the second half, when the film gets a little too repetitive. Those same "fat jokes" that worked so well in the opener are old hat once the climax approaches.
Thus, this is a decent little family-friendly comedy. It isn't great, but you'll genuinely laugh on more than a few occasions.
The film is completely forgettable, frequently funny and weirdly satisfying in a Jersey Loser Gets Respect kind of way.
