I'm a huge fan of spoofs. That's spoofs, not reference movies, (Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans. I'm a fan of all the Scary Movies, Naked Guns, and Hot Shots. So how does this rank? Well here's the thing. It's NOTHING like the Friedberg/Seltzer movies, which is great by all standards. However, Mazin still throws us sh*t jokes, urine jokes, and bodily function humor in general. Particularly a fart joke that will make you groan if you're over 16. With all the negatives aside, this movie can be quite clever at times, and it has a coherent storyline. It uses Spiderman/2 for plot outline, and throws in some gags from other superhero movies as well.
So is this a revival of the genre? Well, it has brought up the level from Friedberg/Seltzer, but it doesn't have enough originality and spunk to save the genre. Another thing I thought was great was how they had the decency to bring back the movie theater style poster. All in all, if you're just looking for crude tasteless fun, check it out, but don't go expecting anything too great.
Sometimes before watching a movie, you make the compromise based on the title mainly that you shouldn't expect anything spectacular or innovative.
Being prepared I am not going to watch a sample of amazing comedy I was still a bit disappointed by the movie overall. Watching it in ideal conditions for a movie of its kind still leaves you with a sense of incompleteness.
Overall, mildly entertaining. It had potential to be more fun if was made pg-15 at least. Some scenes seemed to miss a climax point. I watched all of it, but I wouldn't mind if I hadn't seen.
By-the-numbers screen parody fails to resurrect an increasingly tired genre.
The Extended version of Superhero Movie features not only some more violent scenes but also several new dirty jokes that aren't included in the theatrical version. Altogether this adds to a total difference of approximately 6 minutes. Just in case you're a fan of this movie the Extended version is worth a try.
