Near the small desert town of Santa Ynez, a mysterious black car runs down two teenage bicyclers en route to camp, then it hit-and-runs a hitchhiker with local Amos Clements as witness. Sheriff Everett puts his men on alert and plants road blocks in the area to arrest the murderer, but soon he himself falls victim to the car. Sheriff Wade Parent leads the hunt for the vehicle that threatens their town and seems impossible to locate. When his beloved girlfriend, teacher Lauren Humphries, challenges the driver in a cemetery, the car hunts her in her home. Wade realizes he might be dealing with supernatural powers.
A mysterious black, sleek automobile terrorizes everyone it comes into contact with in a small town in Utah. The local sheriff may be the only person who can stop this menace which has been possessed by pure evil.
Propping itself up as a combination of THE OMEN and DUEL, THE CAR is a 1977 supernatural suspense thriller that was dismissed by critics during the time when STAR WARS was strangling virtually every other film at the box office that year. Indeed, because of John Carpenter's later, similarly-themed film CHRISTINE, THE CAR is next to forgotten.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Plot-wise, it is a jarringly constructed film of a demonic car, a cross between a limo and a hearse, terrorizing the citizens of Santa Ynez, Utah, near Zion National Park. In the chilling opening sequence, it runs down two bicyclists on the highway. Then it begins its assault on the town. It isn't afraid to attack the town's citizens--unless they happen to be in a cemetery. James Brolin is the town sheriff unable to contemplate the possibility that this is much more than some psychopath just killing his fellow citizens at random, though his deputy (Ronny Cox) tries to convince him of that. The spectacular sequence, in which Brolin, Cox, and a third man (R.G. Armstrong) load and hurl explosives into the car, sending it to a fiery, demonic demise, is fairly hair-raising even today, despite a low budget (at least in comparison to today's films).
Elliot Silverstein, who directed the 1965 comedy-western CAT BALLOU and the 1970 pro-Indian western A MAN CALLED HORSE, directs THE CAR quite well, choosing to shoot virtually the entire movie on Utah locations. The car itself is quite chilling, especially with its ominous blaring horn (though not quite as frightening as that of the truck in DUEL). And there are also the typical, though not terribly intrusive, melodramatic complications, including that of the school teacher (Kathleen Lloyd) in love with Brolin who wards off the demon limo in the cemetery, only to have the car come back that night and kill her.
Leonard Rosenman, who composed the score for A MAN CALLED HORSE, creates another good, and quite ominous score for THE CAR, one which appropriates the bone-chilling Gregorian chant "Dies Irae." All in all, THE CAR is not really a masterpiece--but far worse horror films than this one would be made in the ensuing twenty-five years. Call this one a minor gem that was unfairly dismissed in its day.
It will always be compared with Duel. It's about a car killing people without being explained why the car does it or who drives it. Some Indian tries to say what the car is and the deputy things that it is all due the graveyard but you will never know what it is all about. But still it's worth watching. The movie has some known actors from the seventies and some B-actors but the best known are the main lead James Brolin and on of his deputies Ronny Cox, known from Deliverance. It never contains blood and some killings by the car are lame but it is the suspense used that creates this movie. Some effects are worth watching, just see how the car takes out two police cars. After 90 minutes you still know nothing about the car but the car knows that it had entertained you.
The demonic car in this film was designed by George Barris, who specialized in custom cars and who worked on a number of film and television projects, including the car driven by TV's "The Munsters", Herbie "The Love Bug", and the vehicle driven by the heroes in "Ghostbusters".
