The assistant of the American Ambassador in Paris James Reece is an aspirant spy working in minor jobs for the CIA. James lives with his fiancée Caroline and expects to be promoted to the special operations. When James is assigned to drive the unconventional but efficient agent Charlie Wax in Paris, James learns that a terrorist cell is preparing to attack the American delegation and he is close to the key element that will explode the group of representatives of his government.
James Reece is an ambitious aide to the U.S. Ambassador in Paris, doing little jobs for the CIA and hoping to get into black ops. On the night he and his girlfriend, Caroline, become engaged, he's told to pick up Charlie Wax at Orly. Charlie is an unorthodox government employee - large, bald and bearded, foul-mouthed and eccentric. Charlie immediately takes James on a wild ride of murder and mayhem, through ethnic enclaves. As bodies pile up, the purpose remains opaque to James. Caroline, unhappy that James has been out of touch for a day, tells him to bring Charlie for dinner. Charlie can be charming - where will it lead? Does the chess-playing James have what it takes?
Luc Besson's movies fascinate me. Okay, they do – for the most part – require you to suspend your disbelief, but they have a pretty decent story at the same time. And they are fun to watch; it's fun to watch things go "kaboom". Even if there are almost always absolutely no ramifications for blowing up Chinese restaurants and popping caps into waiters.
So when it came to mind that Pierre Morel was also responsible for "Taken" (which I totally loved), I reckoned this movie would be in the same cool vein. While I did enjoy "From Paris", I am still not entirely sure I know just what it was about.
What was it about?
It started with a drug thing, the usual of shutting down a ring; then it went personal 'cause the 'blow' was responsible for the death of some government kid. Then it turns out the kid didn't really exist, and it's all about terrorism (Arab, naturally. So predictable in this climate), and the terrorists need to annihilate representatives of some sort of political conference - which was never really connected to anything in the film, no reasons given for doing such. I think. I really did have some difficulty following the plot as it jumped and skipped from one course of unrelated action to another. Of course it might have helped if I paid more attention to what was going on, and if I didn't allow my head to go off on a tangent at Jonathan Rhys Meyer's cheap porn star goatee – it really aggravated me; what exactly was it doing there?
But yeah – the end really did leave with a "What the f
?" kind of feeling. It just didn't seem to make any sense whatsoever. That being said: I did enjoy it, though was definitely expecting more coherence from the storyline. It still does make for a fun, violent, convoluted romp around Paris. Maybe sometimes nothing really needs to make sense for it to be entertaining.
La Royale. With cheese.
God bless John Travolta. What he went through in losing his son I would not wish on my worst enemy. I hope he and his family can somehow overcome this horrid loss and make the best of their lives.
This being written, however, my duty as a professional film critic makes the following paragraphs even more painful.
Almost as painful as having sat through Travolta's latest dud, "From Paris With Love." Basically a "Training Day" meets James Bond action/adventure/spy flick, "Paris" tells the oft-told story of James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, "Mission Impossible III," "The Tudors"), an assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to France and a wanna-be secret agent.
He is given low-level espionage assignments via calls to a cell phone that could easily be compromised (just one of the many examples of unbelievable events which take place in this film); but he yearns for more sophisticated stuff.
He gets his wish when he is ordered to pick up his partner, Charlie Wax (where DO they come up with these names?!) at the Paris airport. Wax, played by Travolta (slightly more over-the-top than he was in "The Taking of Pelham 123," but much funnier than he was in "Old Dogs"), is seen arguing with a French customs agent over cans of a sports energy drink. The dialogue goes downhill from here.
After this scene, the two head to a local Chinese restaurant for dinner. The food evidently is not very good, so Wax shoots up the place, killing countless Asians while supposedly looking for a cocaine kingpin.
I write "supposedly" because this is just the first of a series of plot lines that Wax relays to Reece either to confuse him - and the audience - or to keep everything really super secret. Anyway, the body count continues to pile up as Wax goes after - in turn - Pakistani money launderers, local drug dealers, French police and international terrorists.
In the meantime, Reece spends half the film toting around a large Chinese vase full of blow and trying to figure out what's up with his suspicious girlfriend, Caroline (Kasia Smutniak, a series of Italian films and TV series no one has ever heard of).
Plot less and pointless, the conclusion is straight out of "Syriana" (a much better though equally confusing motion picture) and nothing is resolved, one way or another.
As poorly written as it is directed (by Pierre Morel, "Taken"), the buddy chemistry between Wax and Reece is about as warm and touching as the relationship between Robert Blake and his late wife.
The only reason in the world anyone should see this movie is to catch Travolta (his head shaved for SOME reason) crack wise a few times in between the senseless bloodshed - and that is nowhere near enough of a recommendation for spending one's hard-earning money to do so.
Catch this on DVD - at friend's house - if you really, really have nothing else to do.
Doesn't really know what it wants to be. Morel would have done better to remember the "to thine own self be true" bit, and stayed with the dunderheaded shoot-'em-up vibe, with Travolta having a blast, often literally.
