When Lisa Tepes, beloved wife of Vlad Tepes AKA Dracula is acused of witchcraft and burned at the stake by an overzealous bishop, Dracula declares war on the people of Wallachia and unleashes an army of murderous demonic creatures from hell. Luckily, Trevor Belmont, last survivor of the Belmont clan, a disgraced family known for hunting all kinds of monsters, is still in town and agrees to take the fight to the lord of vampires.
A vampire hunter fights to save a besieged city from an army of otherworldly creatures controlled by Dracula.
I grew up liking anime and manga during my teenage years, but haven't been watching all that much of such in my adult life. I guess I sort of outgrew that whole scene and genre. However, I do make the occasional return back to watch something if I happen to stumble upon something that catches my attention.
I found "Castlevania" on Netflix and instantly gave it a watch, because I did like playing the games on the PlayStation.
The storyline told in this animated series was actually quite good and entertaining. It is a dark anime, if there is such a thing. And by that I mean it deals with a fair amount of violence, mature situations, set in a dark and gothic time, etc.
"Castlevania" had a very interesting gallery of characters. And these characters were nicely detailed and brought to life on the screen. I watched the version where they spoke English, but I am not familiar with if this actually has a Japanese version or not.
If you enjoy anime and manga and need something that goes beyond the cute girls, cat ears, fancy neon colors, and the like, then "Castlevania" is a good choice. I was genuinely entertained with what I saw.
As a lifelong fan of Anime and of the original Konami Castlevania game, I thought this series was rather enjoyable. Though fans might be somewhat disappointed it doesn't entirely capture the spirit of the game as the story is more focused as a prequel. But I was pleased with the top notch voice acting and direction. And the high quality animation was not lacking in the least as the action scenes were well fluid in it's intensity and movement.
The one problem that I had with the series has to do with the feeling of Anti-Christian sentiment, which took away the full enjoyment of the series. The Church and the priests were portrayed as corrupt thugs with anti-science standing and the townspeople were witch-hating mongers carrying torches and pitchforks. While Dracula was treated more as an anti-hero being justified in his actions, than being the threat to be defeated by the heroes. This creates a plot hole worthy of CinemaSins as there is no real development as to why the heroes are fighting him.
So while the series is good, it's not enough for me to run out and buy a copy of the DVD or pay for a subscription to Netflix to watch.
